For me I'm not sure; I'd be tempted to say that's the way the cookie crumbles - as an example today Elvis had two runners in his P6 in the Derby - Hawwaam and Samurai Warrior - so why should he be penalized by letting all the others who did not have SW get through as well ? On the other hand, maybe if they knew Hawwaam was going to be non-runner, they would have included SW - difficult to please everyone
Racing is still a bit of a leveler in some cases; the big guys have all the dough and are able to fork out the millions on horseflesh that in many instances are only really worth thousands (taking the current stakes on offer into account), so I feel happy for the small guys who take what is left and score; the same applies to punting - just my opinion

6 years 2 months agoI was standing just about next to Hawwaam when this happened, Gift of the Gap got upset as he was cantering to the start, at the very same time some whistle/ bell was blown went off by whoever's was in the ring indicating the jockeys must either saddle or leave the parade ring, Hawwaam was right next to that bell and got a freight, falling backwards..... no funny business, unfortunate event. The stripes or whoever's let that whistle go is the closest to blame as some horses was already leaving the parade ring, and had jockeys on, so why still blow the damm whistle... from the opposite side racing journalist Ettiene Louw witnessed this and took pics of the incident, showing Gift of the Gap and Hawaam getting upset.Sylvester wrote: today seemed a strange day.
i would rather ask what triggered the Hawaam incident? Big money lost in that one incident deserves a full investigation.

Guys the Hawaam incident is a disgrace to the punting game.. transparency is very important.. in fact this morning when i logged into this very site .. i read comments like bookies is postin bets with Hawaam not even in the betting .. this I found strange .. and i asked around a few times if Hawaam is a scratching .. ..
MY BETS WAS GOING WELL WEN I WANTED TO WATCH THE RACE AND HAWAAM WAS A SCRATCHING .. IF PEOPLE AR STILL THIS DEVIOUS AND NOT TELLING THE PUBLIC THE TRUTH BEFOREHAND EVEN THE SMALLEST SUSPICION OF A HORSE NOT BEING WELL BEFORE THE RACE ... IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCE TO THE PUNTING PUBLIC CONSISTENTLY THROUGHOUT THE DAY FOR PUNTER TO CHANGE THE BETS. IAM DISGUSTED BY THE POWERS THAT BE FOR NOT INFORMING THE PUNTING PUBLIC.. NOW WE ALL KNOW CORRUPTION & CONS IS STILL PREVALENT

Peterpan, I actually cannot believe what I have just read. You cannot be insinuating that the bookies, Phumelela etc knew that Hawwaam was going to be scratched and Phumelela kept it quiet and that's why the bookies priced up without him?Surely you cannot believe that they knew he wouldn't run. His being injured before the race was completely unpredictable.

Surely not in that fashion, two favourites withdrawn before their respective races?
A bit confused by your question here? Are you suggesting that there is something more than coincidence at play here?
Not at all sir, you would prefer to see them being beaten fair and square in a race, rather than in that manner. Well done to those who covered in those races where the favourites were scratched.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

.....really tragic and hardly ever have a banker in a P6 mostly have a kicker or 2 to take on the good thing....my P6 yesterday could not see past Hawaam and bankered him in all exotics ..... when the indecent happened I like many many others was gutted.....not a nice thing to happen to any horse let alone a favorite ....but the crowd around the parade ring seemed unperturbed.....maybe there just for the prawns......:S

Muhtiman, that is why I asked whether the tickets on the horse injured should all go through if he was odds on or maybe if he was favourite at time of scratching? I am not in favour of getting the new tote favourite as you might have left it out on purpose in the first place.

.....rules are rules and for that reason I normally play to beat favorites....when bankering Hawaam yesterday the thought was in my mind of what could go wrong.....as I was feeling a bit exposed....but we cannot have rule changes that would automatically qualify any winner to go through an exotic if a favorite is scatched.....that is when we could invite the real shenanigans and conspiracy that has been suggested here.....jocks falling off on the way to the start.....handlers not trying harder to load etc'
