PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: Grooms strike in Port Elizabeth
DATE: Wednesday 20 March 2019
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming

Following the illegal strike by grooms in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday 19 March, Phumelela is pleased to announce that it’s back to business as usual today with the grooms having returned to work.

Clyde Basel, Phumelela Racing and Events Executive, said that the meeting between trainers and grooms managed to settle any misunderstanding. The grooms were granted a 25% increase in wages in September last year.

The grooms embarked on the illegal strike yesterday demanding a further increase on the basis that normally they receive annual increases in March of each year, however due to the 25% increase granted in September, any misunderstanding in this regard was explained and clarified by the trainers.

Should the grooms in Port Elizabeth embark on a new strike, contingency plans are in place to ensure that Friday’s race meeting will go ahead.
