Please don't kill those yellow insect eaters
6 years 9 months ago
....my fear now that I may have outed the culprits that could be responsible for further grass track damage is that they TPTB try eliminate them by resorting to poison.....these creatures are flourishing around the grass tracks because of increased insect activity above and below the turf....eliminating them could lead to bigger problems and the requirement for more pesticide progammes to stop grass eating crickets getting at the turf.....the yellow Mongoose is extremely adaptable and resourceful and would rather feed on carrion than have to hunt and dig for insects.....by placing feed stations on the inside of the track will prevent them from digging around the turf in the drier months.....once the grass is green then stop the food source at feeding stations and allow them to feed on the surface insects that feed on the grass....

....I see that these creatures have been wrongly named and now shamed by Patrick DAVIS and are responsible for the recent Groot Gat at the Vaal.....pretty sure they are going to be eradicated by poison because it is quick and cost effective.....and because okes like Patrick Davis never did their jobs properly and allowed this to become a problem when taking short cuts to reduce track maintenance to save costs over the last few years....what a shame....

.....I would like to add that the reason for the bigger population of these yellow insect eaters in the area is that their surrounding habitat is being encroached upon.....and they are now adapting around the racecourse......they do not normally burrow for insects in the summer months as their food source is found amply on the grass surfaces.....in drier winter months they do resort to burrowing for certain insect larvae....and reading between the lines... pest extermination on the insects will be the next plan of action.....this will be in the form of various poisonous chemicals.... not only will the yellow mongoose eat the poisoned insects but so will the birds, frogs and other small creatures...all because it is cheaper that more regular racecourse maintenance and track inspections....

Let's put it this way.
I'm not sure of the Vaal's track specs. So for argument sakes let's say it's 2000m long and 20m wide. That equates to 40000 sq mtrs.
How many people and how much time is required to inspect 40000 sq mtrs before each race meeting? And in between races?
And then who in their right mind can gaurentee what's happening sub surface from 1 minute to the next!
Eg sinkholes

....awe fukkit gooi the the gif then....the same mind set as those that f@cked local racing by not putting back into the game and when they slashed maintenance projects at the Vaal to boost shareholder dividends .....I at least identified the problem 2 years ago and offered an idea of a symbiotic solution....now we have some doos that spent the last several months back in the UK..... CONSULTING WITH PEST CONTROLLERS IN THE local AREA WITH ONLY one solution....POISON....

The hole was up to the person's knee so we have every right to shout from the grandstand
When u cut costs expect a reaction when the welfare of jocks and horses are not considered serious enough to check the track.

When dealing with nature, expect the unexpected!Len Sham wrote: The hole was up to the person's knee so we have every right to shout from the grandstand

I'm sure that's what some trainers would tell their patrons when their "shit hot" favorite doesn't find the winners box

If it's the person's or team responsibility to check the condition of track between races a solution can be found... problem is Phumelela,s and no one else,s or whoever they appoint to do it.
