I'm sure the same results apply to SA as well .
Unfortunately it does not only comply to race horse breeding only but to most industries resulting in job losses.

.....one has only to check the results of the recent total dispersion of the breeding stock of the Scott Bros Highdown stud.....then factor in that breeders have not really had interest in what was on offer and much of the stock has not been bought for breeding.... :S ....factor in all those staff that worked there....the industry is in a major contraction phase brought about 1stly Jooste's aggressive positioning in the buying and then the breeding market which decimated the smaller owner/breeder and middle market.....then the collapse of the Jooste empire which has taken out the big spend factor.....then we have this issue of where racing is going as far as the operator PHUM seeking to divest from local assets.....what will happen to the stakes "pot".....prediction a massive shrinkage....then with more buyers getting out....less interest in sales....then more breeders getting out.....it sure dont look to good for the future of local breeding....

true but at the end of the day owning and breeding horses has and always been a mugs game or the preserve of the extremely wealthy who do it because they can. i.e they have so much cash they dont know what to do with it so may as well blow it on horses. thats why racing is the sport of kings. anyone who owns horses - racing jumping breeding you name it and expects to make money out of it is an idiot.
