NYS - Will there be enough buyers ?
7 years 1 month ago
Two major yearlings thoroughbred sales in the next 2 weeks :
Cape sales NYS 12-13 April - Durbanville - 343 lots (although I see 40 withdrawals already)
Bloodstock South Africa NYS 24-26 April - TBA Complex Germiston - 526 lots (22 withdrawals).
Buyers (those that are left) will be spoilt for choice.
New (newish) sires that catch my eye :
Flower Alley (obviously), Jackson, Twice Over
Great chance to find a champion (without spending big money)

Do you think CTS and Klawervie will both survive? Sure the liquidation process will mean a lot of money needs to be raised to buy Joostes share in both

....how can one put a value on a sales company....it has no tangible assets....no doubt with all the shenanigans with Jooste & co and all the window dressing more was paid out to get outsiders in to chase bids for Mayfair to acquire a substantial amount of the lots....case in point....what happened to the six million plus worth of horseflesh Magnier was supposed to have bought at 2017 Emperors Palace sale in JHB....so far 2 of 8 of those purchases are recorded as still owned by Klavervlei before being recently transferred to new owners....this is only the tip of many other Shenanigans where outsiders bid for lots but never paid....all a grand cover up....the true test will come when the liquidation order is granted....and the liquidators open the books.... :S

I think there will be a shortage of big buyers in CPT for that sale and there will be lots of bargains unless the breeders buy back and hope to get better money at the RTR sales.....
Muhti has a valid point in terms of "grey area buyers" at the Cape sale and with many lacking the appetite to acquire more right now the prices will reflect that.
Most of the smaller buyers will look to spend at the Nationals where I still think there will be bargains but not as bad as we will see in CPT.

....grey area buyers....that's putting it mildly....what was Jooste thinking when he had "the Phantom of Magnier" bidding for 7 of his Klawervlei lots he did not want to bid against himself so had someone bid on behalf of Magnier....FFS Magnier or any of Coolmore connections would never have bought that dros.....WTF would he be doing bidding or be behind the bidding of what were patently not the type of pedigree that Coolmore have their hands in.... :S

I think we will see more of the Cape partnerships that came to the fore to clean up Mayfair horses buying what they perceive to be top specimens - Those horses with 50/50 peds or conformation might be a big problem because there are so few small owners around

Remember Day 1 Lot 1 to 117 is "Select Sale " Going to be plenty pin hooking for Novemeber RTR sales - Also minimum bid R20k .
They will fly you down and give you accommodation , which could become a very expensive weekend with no return.
Moral of the story wait for Nationals . much better and you dont have to deal with all the smoke a mirrors and BS that come with CTS Sales .

....if the CTS is still a going concern by November it may be because they may merge with BSA....can't see this charade standing up in the face of lower turnovers and still able to have the stakes guarantee for these sponsored races.....see that some of the the management of both were getting rather cozy in Hong Kong recently....

As breeders, we had to make our decisions for this year prior to the Steinhof implosion. I entered 13 on the CTS sale and none on NYS. My alternative was to send 5 or 6 to NYS. However, that would have meant that my remaining CTS string would have been weakened., and one has the problem that some that you think are suited to NYS may not make the cut. With the benefit of hindsight, probably erred in not going to NYS.
The CTS cost structure is such that the costs for vendors for day 1 is significantly higher than day 2. For Session 3 ( now included in day 2) you avoid the hefty $million entry for horses that are not very commercial or are not likely to be suited to the sales race. I didn’t put anything onto day 1, although perhaps half my string would have qualified- again maybe an error if the average price for day one turns out to be much better than day 2.
There is no doubt that it is a buyers’ market at present. Yearling production has stayed quite high and demand has been declining steadily, particularly in the middle to lower market. This year the market overhang is exacerbated by the drawn-out forced disposal of the Mayfair horses, coming soon after the more rapid forced disposal of the Van Vuuren horses. In addition our racing is increasingly dominated by low MR handicaps, which means that a crappy 7 year old has as much chance of winning stakes cheques as a decent 3 year old, so owners hang on to such horses and don’t replace their racing stock as often as they otherwise would. It takes a few years for breeders to adjust production. However, this IS happening, and just about every breeder is culling mares this year and many were culled last year.
The CTS Premier sale in January held up quite well, thanks to increased participation from non SA buyers and the return of some buyers who had stopped attending CTS in the Jooste era. Vendors were also realistic in setting their reserves.
There are a lot of very nice horses on the CTS sale, and the NYS catalogue looks as strong as ever. Hopefully the international buyers will again be strongly represented at the NYS, if not at the CTS sale.
If we get the long awaited breakthrough with respect to the export protocols in the near future, if we can expand affordable ownership through bigger partnerships and syndication, and if we improve the marketing of racing and ownership, then we can restore the market equilibrium.
In the meantime, it’s a great opportunity for owners to acquire quality horses at attractive prices.

.....see that Heversham Park have pulled their entire draft of 15 lots from CTS sale.....I wondered why they would want to trek all the way down to the Cape when the BSA are just down the drag
..........guess we will see these at the BSA 2yr old sale....
