Hong Kong for Monkshood
7 years 2 months ago
Monks Hood, the brilliant winner of the Gr2 Gauteng Guineas ten days ago and winner too of the Gr2 Dingaans, is in the process of being sold to a Hong Kong owner.
Monks Hood – should be suited to Hong Kong tracks
A lot of the necessary veterinary tests and red tape procedures have already been finalised for the Wilgerbosdrift Stud-owned Querari gelding, but the sale has not yet been finalised by the pending new owner.
Trainer Alistair Gordon said, “It is a hard one to lose a horse of this calibre, but every horse has its price.”
Hong Kong is one of the few countries in the world where average stakes returns per horse is more than the average cost of ownership, so Monks Hood will have a good chance of recouping his cost price.
The process for the next overseas shipment from the Kenilworth quarantine station is expected to start in June, depending on the numbers. If it does go ahead, Monks Hood can only expect to reach Hong Kong by the end of November after the arduous journey via Mauritius and Europe.

European racing is too tough

......why should good breeders.... own and race colts/geldings when they breed for sale....that is the nature of their business....why not sell and invest proceeds in breeding instead...the time has come that Hong Kong is hungry for our good horses....and with China becoming a big player the market is set for our bloodstock to be in demand....

I'm sure you are aware Mrs Slack did not breed this horse- Its was bought to race in South Africa and certainly not with the idea to make a stallion- she is not short of bus fare so for me it would be wonderful to see this horse race in her name(even in part) in HK
“He is lovely horse. He was from a small stud and we thought few would notice him at sale. But everybody did so he wasn”t a cheapie. But he looks like he could develop into a pretty good horse,” she added.
Bred by Arne and the late Ben Botha, Monks Hood is a son of Querari (Oasis Dream) out of the three-time winner Amber Boquet (Camden Park).

....at the end of the day.....it's about buying, selling and marketing.....I think Mrs Slack who may not really be short of the profit this "pin hook" may have generated..... is doing something more for the betterment of our breeding industry.....by getting the product out there.....

But she could do more - Sell part of him to a HK buyer then invite that buyer to either come out to our sales or offer to go into another horse half bought on our sales - He needs HK as I think he is twice the horse Cherise Cherry was, a fixture of HK racing for years and earned I think over 13mil there. If i recall that horse did not win a single leg of the TC - It's not as if South Africa is some unknown to HK Racing (we are more than well known there with jocks, horses and trainers) but perhaps some of the techniques Jooste used to get buyers over here are worth keeping and good partnerships are worth more than a quick sale
