The Grand Heritage by the Numbers
There are two fantastic things about this week. The first is that it’s a short week with just four working days to get through. The second, and best, is that it means that we’re all set for this year’s running of The Grand Heritage sponsored by World Sports Betting at the Vaal Racecourse on Saturday.
If you’re taking an interest in the day and heading out to the course, here’s a By The Numbers breakdown of the big day. A total of 10 fun facts about the main event.
1 – One horse will reign supreme on Saturday afternoon. Unless there’s a dead-heat of course.
9 – The age of the oldest runner lining up in this year’s race. The evergreen Vulcan from the Scott Kenny stable is taking on the young guns and will be ridden by JP van der Merwe.
R10 – The entry fee at the gate. All monies will be handed over to a number of rotary clubs within the Vaal Triangle.
19 – The saddle cloth number of the only filly in this year’s race.
Rouge Allure is taking on the boys and will be ridden by apprentice Mpumelelo Mjoka.
28 – Runners in the field. It’s the biggest thing that sets The Grand Heritage apart from every other race in South Africa. No other race sees this many horses charge down the track.
50 – The lowest allocated weight in The Grand Heritage this year. Plum British, for the combination of trainer Paul Peter and jockey Mathew Thackeray, and Orapa from the Candice Dawson stable will both carry 50kgs.
61.5 – The weight that Amazing Strike from the Alec Laird stable will carry as the top weight in the race.
71 – Number of entries received for the 2017 renewal of The Grand Heritage before the final field was whittled down to its final number.
1475m – The distance that The Grand Heritage is run over. It results in something of a cavalry charge as the power packed field head down the straight at the Vaal Racecourse.
R406 250 – The portion that the winner will claim of the total R750 000 stake. There’s prize money all the way to 10th place with positions six to 10 each awarded R10 000.
