MEDIA RELEASE
5 JUNE 2017
It’s “derby” day at Scottsville in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, June 18, where Track & Ball Gaming put their name to what in past years were the two distance “classic” races in KwaZulu-Natal, the Derby and the Oaks.
The two Grade 3 events over 2 400m, the Track & Ball Derby and Track & Ball Oaks, are now open weight-for-age races where penalties are imposed relative to graded race success and both events have drawn strong entries that are sure of result in exciting finishes.
The Derby has attracted 15 entries that include the winner of the Lonsdale Stirrup Cup Captain Splendid along with Mr Winsome that finished a close third to Ten Gun Salute in the recent Betting World 1900. Pagoda, second to Al Sahem in the SA Derby at Turffontein and Let It Rain that was second to Ilitshe in the Caradoc Gold Cup are also among the entries along with Helderberg that was runner-up in the Sledgehammer.
The filly Witchcraft, that won the Track & Ball Oaks at Scottsville last year has been entered for both races and with the other Track & Ball Oaks entries including second and third in the Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks at Turffontein, Oriental Oak and Royal Utopia, the field should break down to a very competitive race.
Zafira, winner of the Sun Classic and Francia, second in the Woolavington at Kenilworth, strengthen the entry as do the East Coast Handicap winner Epona and the likes of Girl On the Run that was second in the Gerald Rosenberg and Coby that finished third in the testing Gold Bowl at Turffontein.
Two mouth-watering clashes to look forward to.
Supplementary entries close at 11am on Friday with declarations due by 11am on Monday.
