Anabolic steroids, more correctly known as anabolic-androgenic steroids --whether naturally occurring or synthetic -- such as stanozolol, all mimic, to a greater or lesser extent, the effects of testosterone. They have two main actions: the first is anabolic, stimulating cell growth, and the second is virilising, increasing masculine characteristics. Examples of their anabolic effects are increased protein synthesis, increased appetite, increased bone remodelling and growth, and stimulation of bone marrow, which increases the production of red blood cells. Anabolic steroids stimulate the formation of muscle cells and hence cause an increase in the size of skeletal muscles, leading to increased strength.

....I concur.... .....and definitely do not advocate the uncontrolled use of steroids.....however in extreme circumstances they have a function in speeding up treatment of even epistaxis and many other respiratory related conditions.....

One of the key areas that needs examination are the Stallions that are imported and used in SA without the full medical history being available. Stallions that raced on furosemide which while not important in States would be important in SA to put the race history as well as the medical history into perspective.
Daughters of these stallions then being known bleeders themselves then going on to breed and thus the cycle perpetuating itself.
At least buyers knew that a good percentage of Jet Masters would have wind problems but the risk was taken buying yearlings knowing this fact up front.

There can be no doubt that bleeding is in the genes
The rot started when stallions were brought from the USA
Prior to that most bloodstock had come from the UK/Ireland
To my knowledge the German Control do not allow any horse that raced on Lasix to stand at stud
and the same for a mare that has bled

A study was done some years ago by Onderstepoort. I recall a particularly difficult filly I owned ( Dream World ) after a race at Turffontein when she was selected to be scoped as part of the study. Rest assured she made her presence felt and no scope was done.
A major contributor to the bleeding problem was the proliferance of Northern Dancer lines in the Stallion population in SA. ND himself was a bleeder.

Gajima, i don't think enough information and statistics are gathered on the race horse population in SA to get a good picture of what is going on. Bleeding per say in race horses has to be multi factorial from being predisposed by genetics to the various inoculations, vaccines, live viruses etc. to bedding allergies as well as many other factors.
It is a subject that should be researched much more thoroughly however the first question would be, who is going to fund this?

Tiger,
There was a study done by a Stipe who was awarded a Doctorate based on his
thesis which proved that there was a definite genetic problem
I think his name was Weideman

Me too, I was sent the original post by someone with more racing knowledge than anyone I know, and they honestly have no idea why South African horses bleed so much more than other nations
