What a stink

The Department of Environmental Affairs has found that there is an unacceptably high level of landfill gases being emitted from the Shongweni landfill site, which they say is having an adverse effect on communities. PICTURE: BONGANI MBATHA

Durban - The stench in the upper Highway area may jeopardise South Africa’s richest horse race, the Vodacom Durban July, as racehorses stabled at Summerveld suffer unusual nose bleeds and coughs. Read more www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/kwazulu-...july-at-risk-7936426

Hi Dave, the earlier post was mine. I live in the area, I cant believe that if Summerveld is affected as badly as the other Upper Highway areas that the horses, trainers and stable staff are not getting as sick as the rest of the community. its a sorry state of affairs at present. According to members of the NPO they have identified a number of toxic waste items being disposed of, the latest being Vanadium Alloys, which is fatal if inhaled and may cause cancer. it was not half as bad during the KZN champions season in 2016 but i think this year the raiders may actually make some noise.

For years residents of Wentworth and Merebank have been inhaling fumes from the oil refineries of Engen and SAPREF. The Engen oil refinery has houses just next to them, not even 50 metres. Clairwood racecourse was about 8km from these refineries.

Naresh you hit the nail on the head...Clairwood park was less the 1;5 kms from Engen and the sewer factory and the pollution there was worse rated, second highest in world once....horses still performed admirably so now to use horses to persuade otherwise is questionable... I live in Merebank still do and all complaints fall on deaf years...best of luck to residents of the Highway area but I think the dump won't go away...
