The panel constituted of trainers; Nha; Vet; Phm track managers and jockeys. The top 4 agreed it was safe to continue but the jocks said no.

When I compare the conditions that are raced in day in day out in the UK, I believe our jocks are at fault. Whilst I would never want any harm to come to beast or jock, clearly they have no stomach for conditions that are not perfect. As an outsider looking in, it appears that some jocks just have too much influence on the mindset of others. Here without doubt Piere Strydom looms large. My thoughts are simple. If you dont want to ride, declare this and be jocked off. If the "panel" decides its safe, you have the right to withdraw. As Rob alludes to in his post, some jocks are "fat" excuse the pun and can afford to lose out on fees for raceriding. The Jockey Club licences, why are they so limp wristed in this issue? Why not issue fair weather and wet weather licences? It is not as radical as it sounds.

So in terms of the pick 6 - will I now get 20% on 17 bucks odd?

I would rather be safe than sorry when it comes to safety issues, but if the "Panel" is not what they feel is representative then that should be addressed . Otherwise jocks should be subject to disciplinary action where they have the onus on them to prove they had a case to withhold services.

If there was a million dollar prize at stake I guarantee under todays conditions they would have ridden, with smiles on their faces and with no holding back.

The first five races was commingled with the French Tote. The remainder of the meeting was not part of their schedule.

Only the Jocks wanted the meeting abandoned

i think the jocks would win everyday as its neigh impossible to prove that conditions were safe - I personally think that if the riders believe the track is unsafe then lets not force the issue - we can always have another bet but how do you replace a lost life... I have never ridden in my life so I really don't know how dangerous it is but I would hate to see a horse or Jockey die just so the punt can continue.. I took the view that we would be lucky to even race today so I did not expect much...

I've no real idea what conditions were like at Turffontein today (I watched a couple of replays on the Attheraces website and I didn't think they looked too bad), but I can't believe they could possibly have been any worse than at Sedgefield where the meeting was completed without incident.

It is true that the best jocks in the World are the ones sitting in the grandstand or the ones watching Racing on TV. Mr.H's post is the most accurate. Whatever the going looks like on TV, it is not the real thing. Heavy going itself is very rarely the issue. Inconsistency is the problem. Horse and rider are in grave danger when speeding through inconsistencies.
To the best of my knowledge, Piere was not the decision maker yesterday.
Turffontein Inside Course is in a very bad state today after just those few races yesterday. That tells it's own story.
I'm the end, if you do force racing to go on, by dismissing the jocks who complain and declare the going unsafe, you open yourself up to huge problems if someone then gets hurt. The very same rider who is a low earner and decides to ride and then gets injured, will open up a can of worms in terms of bad publicity and liability. So too, the horse that breaks a leg. The Operators and NHA will be in huge trouble, as the experienced jocks had WARNED that the going was dangerous.

What seems sensible is that any jock who feels it is unsafe to ride declares that and excuses himself for the rest of the day ...........if enough jocks are available ,race on ....if not abandon!

Chances are you will get jocks who have less experience and have fewer rides who will agree / want to race in potentially unsafe conditions and this will only worsen a situation and add to the risk..

LG I don't think any one wants to see some harm in any race meeting.

Yesterday they said the Pedometer Reading was 26 - In your opinion with the amount of rain do you think that was a true reading?

I thought it was a bit low , I ask this as there was a time in CPT where the apparatus used was not working properly for months giving the wrong reading before someone picked it up.

Another point why do the opperaters always seem to make it through to the 1st leg of the Pick Six to take their share on all the pools. Comingling with France another point . I think that puts doubt in the minds of Punters and we get comments like we do.
