Claiming Races should be re-introduced.

Years ago they had claiming races where horses were allocated weight according to the price the owner wanted to get for his or her horse. The higher the price /claim the more weight carried.
It gave owners a chance to move their horses along more regularly.

In the 1990's a mare named Sleek Wine won the Grade 1, Garden Province Stakes after being claimed a few races earlier. It won at very big odds.

I've wondered why we don't have this. You 'handicap' your own horse.

The way we apply the MR system, connections have the opportunity to handicap their own horses in all races!

If the breeders want NEW YOUNG OWNERS then claiming races should be a priority... What better way to buy a horse than in training for a newbie .... No waiting time and they get to see their horse in action before buying rather than buying off a dispersal or horse in training sale where the element of doubt and suspicion creeps in. I cannot understand why this is not an industry standard... I also believe there could well be a market for selling shares using the claiming format. Also studfarms that send unsold horses to trainers with instructions to " put together a deal" could rather race them in claiming races and secure buyers that way if they have any faith in their product...

Couldn't hurt to have another option available to the owners.
