Hi All,
Just a bit curious if anyone has managed to make a living on gambling within South Africa? I am currently on a pretty decent run with a certain bookie and I'm in constant fear that my account will be restricted any day now.
From your experiences, what is the normal threshold to be reached before SA bookies start to limit bets and/or restrict accounts?
Cheers

Every Bookmaking firm on the planet( UK the worst) will close or restrict you if you are a long term winner.
I would say very hard these days, unless you can cash bet in fancy dress

As far as I know Interbet will not suspend your account if you use the exchange on their site.

There's nothing special about me yet I have never struggled to 'get on'.
I use two channels :
A bookmaker - Where I place my bigger bets on sport only.
Interbet - Where I 'play' - Almost exclusively on UK horse racing (using a bank of R20k), sports 'in play' betting & the VERY occasional nibble on SA racing.
Tote : Almost not at all because I do a lot of multiple betting on single races & need to know my position before the off. Furthermore I am not inclined to have my stake raped by 20%+ before they even jump.
Betting World - I have an account but never use it as their markups often make we wonder if I have strayed into the wrong event.
The only limit my bookmaker places on me is regarding SA maidens & first timers. As I don't even bet on these races this potential restriction is effectively not applicable.
On long term events - eg Premier League Winner, World Cups etc., he will lay me millions if I so choose.
On big races - July, Met etc., he would lay me at least R1 million of any horse of my choice. Probably more if I asked nicely!
Multiples are pretty much unlimited. I do a lot of those.
With regard to Interbet - I use BOTH Quickbet & The Exchange. If I want a larger bet I will first take the R10k guaranteed by Quickbet & then mop up whatever I can get on the exchange. So, at the very least, you are guaranteed R10k of any horse.
Posters complain that Quickbet offers lower odds. This is not always so with a 'hot' horse. You need to be aware of the charge on the exchange which is not levied by Quickbet. Furthermore you also earn loyalty points from Quickbet so the nett result is sometimes almost identical. But the real issue is 'getting on', people! If you have backed a winner you are never going to grumble about outlaying about 2% - 3% more. It only matters when you get beat!
I often wonder if people who complain about being restricted tell the whole story. Undoubtedly one of the reasons why I have never been restricted is because, in nearly 45 years of betting, I have always settled.
I usually EFT the amount owed to my bookmaker at 'close of play' on Saturday (unless I want a bet on a Sunday). So when he does his settling on Tuesday my money is already there.

Garrick I know a few people who are not "book" customers who have been limited. There is no "story" the issue is truly that we have a dwindling pool of true bookmakers. My experience is that bookmakers are only too happy to extend credit terms and are quite relaxed waiting for the mugs to settle, often over extended periods. The reason is precisely because none of them have books to balance and the outstanding is not needed to square up take-backs. Its a lovely formula. Extend credit, often with absolutely no checks on the punters ability to service this, and if the guy starts winning, limit the clown!

I know a few guys that closed their LM Bookmaker accounts on Monday last week. I heard that there were issues with regards to the double Master Sabina and Fortissima
