From memory I'm sure Fortune was omitted last year because he never hit the top spots in the log ?

This 'Jockeys International' from my point of view is a 'nice to have' .....it's nice to have something different brought to the table on occasion, but I would not really miss it should it not happen.
But seeing that a SA team has been selected, I am bowled over that anyone who knows anything about SA racing can believe that either Yeni or v Niekerk (both certainly capable jockeys) could be a better choice than Strydom. Not that I think it would necessarily influence the eventual result (this surely depends a lot more on the horses allocated to the various jocks), but come on .....it's like comparing a champion like Legal Eagle with good handicappers like Mac de Lago and The Conglomerate - the one will always beat the others at level weights
And if the current log positions of the jocks should be the deciding factor in selecting the 6 making up the team, then the strike rates rather than just the number of winners should be taken into account.

That can also work ....as long as the public accept it and the riders have ridden more than say 200 rides a season( Denise Lee had a strike rate of 20% last season from 5 rides). We should also only work on the LAST SEASON not current as many of the top stables who these top jocks ride for only start coming into form when the Feature races start.
In the last season Van Niekerk had a win strike rate of 17%, Domeyer and Marwing also.
Strydom 15%... Now before I get accused of "Strydom Bashing" I will defend myself and say that he has always been my fav jockey but that is only MY OPINION.
Opinions should not be factors when considering the makeup of a team or race when unbiased logs can be used. There is no need for discussion or anger if the rules are equal for all. In many sports the ire of fans is raised when form players take the place of perceived naturals or fan favourites but to me those guys deserve a chance.
For whatever reason (perhaps because he rides for a strong stable or he is coming into his own) Van Niekerk improved from 19th in 2012(Strydom 1st), 9th 2013(Strydom 4th), 10th 2014(Strydom 5th) , 6th 2015(Strydom 13th).
Racing needs to remove any perceived hint of men in rooms making decisions for their own agendas. Straight forward rules that punters can understand should be the norm not the exception.

Racing. It's a Rush: PRESS RELEASE
Subject: DOMEYER PUTS HAND UP FOR AIR MAURITIUS INTERNATIONAL JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE
Date: NOVEMBER 3, 2016
It’s never nice to report that a jockey is forced to the sidelines via injury but unfortunately Andrew Fortune has had to withdraw from participating in this year’s Air Mauritius International Jockeys’ Challenge.
The two-legged series takes place at Fairview on 18 November before heading to Turffontein on 20 November.
His slot in the South African team has been handed to Aldo Domeyer which reinforces the youthful look of this year’s team to take on a strong visiting contingent that includes the likes of Frankie Dettori and Hayley Turner.
“We are thrilled to announce that Aldo will be involved in the Air Mauritius International Jockeys’ Challenge this year,” Larry Wainstein, Racing Association CEO, said of the substitution.
“While it’s unfortunate that Andrew Fortune won’t be able to take part in this year’s event this does offer an opportunity to another one of South Africa’s young talents to showcase his skills against some of the world’s best,” said Larry Wainstein, CEO of the Racing Association.
The evergreen Piere Strydom was approached to fill the role but unfortunately had to decline due to prior commitments.
The remainder of the International team sees Fergus Sweeney make his debut, while Aurelian Lemaitre, Pat Cosgrave and Robert Havlin all make a return for the 2016 edition.
The South African team will be captained by defending champion jockey S’manga Khumalo and sees Anthony Delpech, Gavin Lerena, Grant van Niekerk and Muzi Yeni all included.
Domeyer ended the 2015/16 racing season inside the top 10 of the jockeys’ log having ridden 110 winners with a strike rate of 17% and a place strike rate of 58%. He was the runner-up in the race to be champion rider in the Western Cape and is a regular feature in the winner’s box in Port Elizabeth.
The 29-year-old already has experience of riding against the likes of Dettori having been part of the emerging team which featured during the 2009 renewal of this unique event.
It’s interesting to note that Khumalo and Yeni also featured in that bonus race and all three riders have now graduated to the South African team proper in recent years.
Domeyer also has international experience having ventured to South Korea in 2011, riding the winner in the YTN Cup at the Seoul Race Park. Another of his big achievements includes riding Martial Eagle to victory in the 2013 edition of the Metropolitan.

Racing. It's a Rush: PRESS RELEASE
Subject: DETTORI SET TO FLY AT TURFFONTEIN
Date: NOVEMBER 14, 2016
We know that races are not run on paper, but if popular opinion is anything to go by then Turffontein could witness the trademark flying dismount early on in the final leg of the Air Mauritius International Jockeys’ Challenge on Sunday.
The reason for that is because Frankie Dettori, who captains a star-studded international team, has landed the ride on Turn Back Time in race five as it was confirmed by way of ballot draw on Tuesday. The charismatic Italian rider also has a lively chance in the seventh after drawing Seattle Lady.
His Irish teammate, Fergus Sweeney also has two chances to make it into the winner’s box with rides confirmed on Captain Chips and Queen’s Jet while Aurelien Lemaitre has claims aboard Modjadji for the Sean Tarry Stable.
Hayley Turner meanwhile will climb aboard Cranberry Crush in the first race of the second leg on Sunday and that looks to be her best of four rides on the card.
As far as the local jockeys are concerned all of captain S’manga Khumalo, Anthony Delpech, Aldo Domeyer and Grant van Niekerk have winning chances on the day.
The Turffontein leg of this contest will wrap up a fiercely contested weekend with the first round of this year’s renewal taking place at Fairview on Friday.
