Not for the first time UK and Irish bookies have most of the European runners shorter than they should be. Think Generous Kitten will go well in the American St Leger and 10/1 (widely available) is a nice E/W price (will be much shorter on the US tote).

Tryster - William Buick wins
Tryster and Buick head European Million effort
BY PETER SCARGILL 10:30AM 13 AUG 2016
Preview: USA, Saturday 11.09pm BST (ATR/RUK)

Arlington Park: Arlington Million XXXIV (Grade 1) 1m2f, turf, 3yo+

IT HAS been five years since a European challenger carried off first prize in the Arlington Million but anything other than a win for the raiders this time would come as a surprise.

Heading the market is Godolphin's Tryster. A wonder on the all-weather last year, he showed he can be just as good on turf when winning the Grade 1 Jebel Hatta during the Dubai World Cup Carnival before soft ground compromised his chances in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Off since, Tryster will be dropped out from stall 12 and ridden for his killer turn of foot by William Buick, who won the Arlington Million in 2010 with Debussy.

Trainer Charlie Appleby said: "Tryster's breeze on Wednesday morning went very well. He has a wide draw but we won't change his running style and he'll come from off the pace. He'll need some luck in running but I couldn't be happier with his preparation."

Whatever the result, Buick will be hot-footing it from the racecourse to the airport to fly to France, where he will partner Ribchester in Sunday's Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.

Keep it simple

Mondialiste proved a star in North America last year with victory in the Woodbine Mile before finishing second to the brilliant Tepin in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Trainer David O'Meara has adopted the approach of ‘if it ain't broke, don't fix it' with Mondialiste in the run-up to the race and said: "He looks grand and he's settled in. He just had a little a canter the last couple of days. It's a similar routine to what we did at Woodbine and Keeneland and he seems in good form."

The sole three-year-old in the race is Deauville, who proved too strong for the home contingent in the Belmont Derby last time but has been handed the widest draw of all in 13.

Aidan O'Brien said: "We had the option of the Secretariat but he would have had to carry a penalty, so we decided to let him take his chance against older horses.

"He's drawn wide but it was the same story when he won the Grade 1 at Belmont last time. The trip and fast ground will suit and he travelled well."

Familiar foe

Leading the US challenge is trainer Mark Casse, who saddles Grade 1 United Nations winner World Approval.

Casse, who landed the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot with Tepin, said: "He won his last race really well and I hope he can put in another strong performance. I like his post in 11 and Florent Geroux can put him where he likes as the horse has tactical speed - we just need some luck.

"I think we're the best of the American horses but when it comes to the Europeans I don't know."

Whatever the result, viewers will have the choice of watching the action on both At The Races and Racing UK.
