I have mentioned this before on here and to craigs larney the only way for racing to survive is to study the Australian way of racing until they do this you will lose owners trainers jockeys and breeders to the industry and in that order..he looked at me like I was mad and that was almost 18 months ago..

I agree with your sentiments Craig and although I have owned horses primarily in kzn, I have had shares in horses in PE, CPT and JHB. I think it is sad that we have lost trainers like Stan in CPT and similar around the country. I have primarily had horses with Duncan since 2000 but have also had shares in horses with Corinne Bestel, Gavin in PE, Kotzen/Ennion/Humby in CPT because of mates. Personally I will not by choice have an interest in a horse with the biggest yards in CPT and be a number, just my choice.
Obviously I will stick primarily with Duncan not just because of our relationship but also because he was my first trainer and we have developed what I believe to be a strong relationship.
I can not believe that people talk about mediocrity when 99% of racehorse punting is made up of maiden plates and MR 79 or less at every centre.
There only seems to be one outlook and that is to let a handful of trainers control racing and have satellite yards all over the country. It is well documented that the CPT trainers raid the most, the question is why?
Why are we not exploring the option that any horse not being programmed for a listed or graded race is not allowed to raid a race with a MR of 79 or less. These horses must be transfered to a trainer in that region, then you will see this shit come to grinding holt.
"What? I must have the horse leave the stable?" Attitudes and behaviours would change immediately. ..
As for trainers not wanting to race their horses against each other in CPT, it is disgusting but the punters don't say a word they just keep accepting fields of 7 and 8 in CPT. I thought it was laughable earlier this year when CPT trainers were asked to please race their horses. To have over 1000 runs in a season how many horses do you need? Forget that if CPT was a stand alone betting centre that there would not be enough money to fund stakes.
My question remains, are there no MR 74 races anywhere else in the country?

ts every trainer is its own private business and it has to grow that business to survive ..there are two operators who stage races and these trainers have to find races for their clients horses to race on ..these trainers have a license which permits them to race horses throughout south Africa not just in the province they live in ..you cannot stifle growth in a business so of course just like any other business for eg a supermarket chain fast food franchises etc they look outside their own domain for business opppurtunities...its called free trade and its the only way forward and these fuck shit and piss regulations that the natal trainers have enforced is a damn disgrace to free trade and democracy ...why should I as an owner who has colours that allow my horses to race throughout south Africa be told it cannot race in certain provinces ...its pathetic and that's putting it kindly

Pirates, i am not saying that your horse should not be able to race in every province at all but do supermarket chains have two stores in one centre?
I suppose everyone will be happy when there are 10 trainers nationally with satellite yards in every province. Then the punters will shit themselves when horses are entered and withdrawn every week never knowing which is the right horse in the stable and fields of 7 runners with two trainers.
What is pathetic at the moment is that KZN racing is the focus but pray tell how many boxes are available in CPT for raiding? Obviously the rest of the country can't drive in and out to raid or is that the Cape's automatic protection? Why are the JHB trainers not raiding MR 74 races in CPT? I suppose they want a Free Convenient Market....what shit

The little matter of 7 hours vs 20 hours may just be a factor TS.
The road to from Durban to Johannesburg is the same distance, I wonder why we dont see more KZN raiders?
Finally, I heard yesterday that MdK has been granted 50 stables in CT. There goes another theory in its moer-in

I don't really think it will be of as much benefit to local trainers as much as a deterrent to raiders. Raiders do create more betting interest so those suggest the "big picture" will be improved may only be looking at a narrow view of the big picture.
What I do believe is there is also a bit of apathy of KZN trainers as far as raiding other centres go, and I'm not only on about weak horses. If you look at Gauteng sprints for pinnacle /90+MR horses there is small pool of horses contesting these all the time with few or no raiders from KZN ,where the noms for similar races are large in KZN. It just seems to me there is a lack of desire to find the best races for their horses compared to Gauteng trainers, big or small who will regularly travel, even to Kimberley to maximise their charges chances.
So it looks a reactive way of dealing with things rather than being proactive.
I'm not against trialling things that may help, or even those that don't help, but make a local owner feel happier about their situation, so I hope it does have that effect.

Each side of this argument has very good points.
For me, however, the bigger picture is that South African racing is in too much trouble and too small to regionalise. All races countrywide should be on Merit, in terms of final field. It's simple. It's the only way to go.
That's my opinion .
