Jockeys and vets make the most money in this industry. Actually way too much. How many trainers get their "chop" from the vet's backhand for services rendered that the owner never knew off but gets the bill to pay? Has the jockey's accounts being checked for all the "chops" they get for winning for owners or the punters they put on?

Officially wat is the jockey rate?
Not arguing with the riding fee but the 10% is just far too much. What financial risk is there to the jockey? I am amazed as to how many owners we still have and all of whom have to foot all of the financial risk. The 10% seems so distorted and then there is the trainer's commission, what financial risk does he have? And then all the spongers in the game who think they add value. Hail the owner.

Re: The 1000 club
9 years 6 days agoIm sure if you asked the likes of Gerrit Viljoen,Barty Leisher,Jarryd Samuels and in even more tragic cases Craig Magua if the 10% commision vs risk is "just far too much" there would be a decisive difference of opinion, also look outside of the top 20 and see how the income stats drop drastically but sadly the high risk factor remains the same...Mac wrote: Not arguing with the riding fee but the 10% is just far too much. Re: The 1000 club
9 years 6 days ago - 9 years 6 days agoPoint taken but out of the top 100 riders 7 have managed to amass 1000 rides or more so 7% .......... and that is not including the jocks that don't make the top 100..so investing 5 years plus of ones life in the knowledge that unless you fall into the top 20% of all riders in the country you will never amount to much is imo a huge risk..easy wrote: Titch
R751.5 Gross (after agents 10%) still ensures a pretty high standard of living.
With an agent (i can guarantee this) a jockey can ride 1000 races a year. ill take on any jockey to prove this.
What he/she needs is
good attitude
good ears
trust
Then after expenses (flights and others) they should be in the region of R350k to R400k
now divide that by 12 months thats nett R30k a month
SO unless i am now informed that due to me living abroad for so long um out of touch and R30k a month is not a lot then i think the 5 years apprenticeship does reap rewards.
just my opinion.

Most agents get a separate 1K per month for their phones and although the norm is 10% some agents get 15% which is roughly R100 or 150 a ride and equates to 120k+ a year and 10% of stakes which is also around 120k and then there are the bonuses ie when Andy won the RTR Cup on Champagne Haze I got a 20K bonus for a horse that I never even had to phone for as it was from his stable and when Gav broke the SA record in June last year I got the same bonus as well as my com for the 42 winners it took to break the record so there are those occasional great months added to this I don't have to get up at all ridiculous hours of the morning, watch my weight nor do I have to ever get on a horse so all in all agents do OK if they can stay away from punting and not treat the income with an easy come easy go attitude...
