Co-mingling With Hong Kong From 4th May 2016
9 years 1 month ago
Phumelela has announced that with effect Wednesday 4 May, all Win, Place and Swinger bets taken with TAB on Hong Kong races will be transmitted directly into Hong Kong’s gigantic tote pools.

Commingling the three pools presents exciting opportunities for TAB customers, who will be able to take huge Win, Place and Swinger bets on Hong Kong races without significantly affecting payouts.
The average win pool on a Hong Kong race is R50 million, while Place pools average R40 million and Swinger pools R55 million. Betting turnover in Hong Kong is nearly R200 billion annually.
“Phumelela would like to thank the Hong Kong Jockey Club for enabling TAB to commingle pools on these three bet types. It’s a big boost to TAB betting on Hong Kong races because it gives TAB customers access to Hong Kong payouts and the chance to bet much bigger amounts without unduly affecting dividends,” said Phumelela Betting Executive Vee Moodley.

The unit cost of Win, Place and Swinger bets on Hong Kong races will be R2 with a R6 minimum for Win and Place.
Win pools are operated on all races with two or more runners with Swinger pools on races with seven or more runners.
Place betting details are as follows:
* 3 or less carded runners – no Place pool
* 4 to 6 carded runners – Place payouts first and second
* 7 carded runners or more – Place payouts first, second and third
TAB operates betting on all Hong Kong midweek meetings and major Sunday fixtures.
All pools barring Win, Place and Swinger will be hosted by TAB as normal.

Seeing as 'we' now have the privilege of betting into these monstrous pools, can we assume that local punters will have the same rules applied to them that exist for overseas punters?
As taken from the HK betting site:
Rebate
Rebate applies to bets placed in Single Pool Win, Place, Quinella, Quinella Place and Merged Pool Win (including Composite Win) for all local races whether it be a bet on a Single-race, All Up or Cross Pool All Up. Any ticket (applicable to Cash Betting and Electronic Shroff Card) or betline (applicable to Telebet, Online Betting Service and other Interactive Services) with a total losing bet amount of HK$10,000 or above will be eligible to receive a rebate of 10 percent of the total losing bet amount of that losing ticket or betline.

I dont like co-mingling for Hong Kong and Singapore. With Hong Kong having real time display of their Win Dividends, lots of opportunities presented themselves taking win and place bets on the "Open Bet" provided you stayed within the limits. Whenever Moreira, Whyte or a former South African based jockey rides all other runners prices on the Tote become inflated creating value on all types of "Open Bets". At least I still have the Trifecta to play and the odd Quartet, also the Jackpot and PA as well.

Almost R19 000 needs to be wagered on a single bet to get a refund. Never saw the win pool going more than R60 000 for Hong Kong. Different story if Phumelela is also co-mingling the pools with their other gateway partners then they will be getting the rebate and not the punter because they will combine all the punters wagers on the same horse in a single bet!

But, of course, Phumelela has not disclosed what the precise, nett takeout is on any bet struck in Hong Kong, South Africa or any other jurisdiction.
If you are lucky you can get a vague 'somewhere between 20% - 33% dependent upon the bet type' response. No mention of incentives, rebates etc.. All of which are funded out of monies you could have enjoyed on your (rare) winning punt.
In this era of financial disclosure I am gobsmacked that they continue to get away with it.
I normally avoid the tote like the plague but last week I made the fatal mistake of striking a win bet on the tote for Sligo (Ireland) as no fixed betting was available on their final race.
Up to the time of the race my selection was reflecting R2,50. The horse duly arrived and then they retrospectively (as I understand it) co-mingled. My R1300 wager was firstly pillaged for an estimated ('estimated' because they refuse to fully disclose) R260 takeout and then they graciously declared a dividend of R1,60.
Why anyone would continue to support this kind of extortion is beyond me. With all their shortcomings I'll stick to bookmakers and pay my 6% on winning bets AND know in advance what I can expect if my selection miraculously arrives.
Tote betting surely must be amongst one of the world's most expensive 'services' (sic).

I have noticed the payouts can be in 5 cents units as well. The 5 cents coin has been discontinued in South Africa and I know all retail stores round it up. What will happen with Saftote ?
For example 71 wins times R6.75 = R 479.25
