Top US trainer disillusioned with drug abuse
9 years 2 months ago
USA: Leading trainer Dale Romans has become so disillusioned with the use of drugs within the sport in America that he is open to moving his operation to Hong Kong.
Romans, who ran Keen Ice in last weekend's Dubai World Cup, thinks the administering of medication has got out of hand in his home country.
Quoted in the South China Morning Post, Romans said: "I'm ready for an adventure and I'm so sick of what's happened to the sport in the US. I'm done with it.
"I'm a horseman and I think races should be won by the better horseman, not something else."
Romans has won a stack of big races during his career, and has previous experience of running horses in Hong Kong, as Breeders' Cup Turf winner Little Mike competed in the Hong Kong Cup on his final start.
"I was very impressed with what I saw in Hong Kong when I was there and I know that, because the vet side of racing is so tightly controlled there, it's the superior horseman who will succeed," Romans added.
"They've never had an American trainer but if they want me, I'd love to train there."
