Some pics from the Big T

1st race for babies. The only girl, Electric Lady in the red and white halved sleeves, beats all the boys:
A trophy for the winner of the Derby Trial:
Talktothestars, nearest, pips another star in the Senor Santa:
Cheeky looking Chessy going down to the last:
2nd from the left, Shatoosh, will win the last:
Oh well:
(Next we'll plan with no shadows)

I remember when racing was the only game in town, I was once asked to deposit the bulky 35mm camera I had around my neck and in obvious clear view to all at the security office at Gosforth Park. When I initially refused, I was given the choice of reconsidering my decision or leave the course immediately! I was then escorted to the security office where my camera was held until I retrieved it at the end of the day. This happened circa 1979/1980. The reason for the ban on cameras was because this was the exclusive domain of the course photographers. If owners wanted photos of their horses on the day, the course photographers were the only ones who could assist. At a fee no doubt!
Nice photos Mac.

Can recall when on holiday and went to Kenilworth Racecourse for the Boxing Day meeting in 1981. I took along the little camera in a clutchbag and then for some reason decided it was best left in the car.
When I went to cash a winning bet at the tote window, the lady handed me R150-- in ten rand notes with the words " please put these into your pockets NOW". I never fully comprehended why she was so over-cautious at the time as that was small change compared to what could be handled on course in Durban.
However now looking back over the years, it made a lot of sense as there could be a tale of two cities somewhere along the way? :silly:
