240 lots- 75 tonight at 18h00 and the rest tomorrow from 12h30.
Eligible for the $m races- this sale has a great history of throwing up value for money champions. See Sporting Post website for write up. Catalogue on CTS website.
I have lots 29,59,89,161,174,202 on sale (lot 39 withdrawn) through Sorrento Stud.
In recent years my record as a vendor:
2015- 6 lots, none yet raced
2014- 8 lots- 4 winners including Ernie ( listed race winner); 3 others multiple placed to date.
2013- 6 lots-Siren's Call Gr1 winner; Forest Fox 3rd Gauteng Guineas
Quality and value every year.

First day of the sale was quite good from both a vendors and a buyers perspective. There was money for the nice horses. Average R112k; Median R80k. 64 lots sold of 75 offered, Top price R550k.
Of the first season sires, What a Winter did well.

If you went to the sale with R100k to spend you could probably have gone home with two reasonably bred horses.
To be sure - this sale will inevitably throw up some decent performers; which rather makes a mockery of spending (squandering?) millions at the January edition.
My racing partner picked up a smart looking horse for 20k. I kept my powder dry as the lovely Ideal World filly which we bought last year came into training yesterday to, hopefully, debut at the beginning of next season.
Count Du Bois seemed surprisingly popular on the day. As were the Horse Chestnut progeny.
Glad I'm not a breeder as it is difficult to feed, let alone produce, a horse for the kind of prices they fetched.
A number of the smaller buyers grumbled about the 'million dollar levy' that is added to the purchase price. Common sense would suggest that it should be added as a % of the purchase price up to a maximum limit rather than as a fixed amount. It massively inflates the price of the 'cheaper' yearlings. But then this industry is not noted for common sense; particularly when the 'funders' ( ie owners and punters) have little or no voice (RA?) and are seen as sponges to be squeezed.
I looked around for newer and, in particular, younger faces. But it was pretty much the same old crowd with the emphasis on old. With registered owners significantly down from a year ago one wonders how this might turn out in a few more years.
Sales gossip was all about an alleged fall out between some of the big players over who knows what. Possibly the rumor mill will produce some facts in the weeks ahead.
All in all a good day out. And I was able to sing 'I ducked a cannon ball' on the way home as a result of keeping my hands in my pockets.
Good fortune to all of those who bought.

.....bargains galore.....very smart peds went for small change......the beauty of this is that one can have a 2nd and even a third bite at them as pin hooking by pre training preppers is patently obvious....and when they come up on the various forth coming culling sales...another buying spree for the schooled and upgraded bloodstock....
