A new star was born at Kenilworth
9 years 6 months agoA new star was born at Kenilworth when the Mike Bass-trained 9/10 favourite Silver Mountain destroyed the field in the Gr 1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas under Aldo Domeyer.
An exhilarated crowd enjoyed great racing and were entertained by popular Oval Market and World Sports Betting's super cash giveaways.
The diminutive Silvano filly had a wide draw of eleven to overcome in the thirteen horse field and Domeyer managed to find some cover in about a midfield position behind a fair pace set by Ocean’s Swell in the windless conditions. The main dangers to the favourite were the unbeaten pair, the Mike de Kock-trained Noor and the Justin Snaith-trained Bela Bela. The former sat in a handy position in the stretched out field, while the latter was right at the back. The rank outsider Valediction lost her jockey while rounding the turn.
In the straight Silver Mountain had a perfect run through the centre and she put the race to bed in a matter of strides before powering clear to win by the proverbial street.
Candice Robinson, Bass’s daughter and assistant trainer, later described her as good if not even better than the like of the previous best fillies the Bass yard had trained such as Sun Classique and Crimson Palace, before adding ‘‘time will tell.’’
In second place was the 100/1 outsider, the Glen Kotzen-trained Our Destiny with the Bass-trained Taffety Tart third. It was an emotional win due to the tough times Mike Bass has had to endure recently with his health. He watched at home and the win would have undoubtedly provided a boost as he continues his brave bid to be walking about again.
Silver Mountain is owned by Maine Chance Farms and was bred by Highlands Farms Stud.
Earlier, the brilliant Sean Tarry-trained four-year-old Captain Al filly Carry On Alice beat a vintage field in the Gr 2 World Sports Betting Southern Cross Stakes over 1000m under S’Manga Khumalo in an exciting finish which saw her only just get there in time to deny the Brett Crawford-trained Cuvee Brut, who finished just as strongly. Carry On Alice was well weighted despite having to carry a 2kg Grade 1 penalty and started at odds of 2/1, while Cuvee Brut, who was 6,5kg under sufferance with the winner according to official merit ratings, was a 14/1 shot. The Dean Kannemeyer-trained 20/1 chance Real Princess was only 0,8 lengths behind the winner in third.
The Listed World Sports Betting Southeaster Sprint was also a thriller with the Kannemeyer-trained Captain Alfredo pipping the Bass-trained Ernie by a shorthead with the amazing Kimberly traveller, the Coenie de Beer-trained Talktothestars, in third.

Best filly in SA...and possibly the best 3 y/o overall in SA. Scary thing is she will get 10 furlongs easy, and will be even better over that distance. Short or long straight won't bother her as she has immediate acceleration when asked for it. She settles so well and she has the pace to race handy as well. So yes...absolute 5 star racehorse in the making. Surely she must have an international campaign when her 3 y/o season is done in SA!
