Final Field Betting World Algoa Cup

Local champ Gogetthesheriff

RELEASED BY: PHUMELELA GAMING AND LEISURE LIMITED

Champion trainer Sean Tarry will be taking two horses to Port Elizabeth on
Sunday to contest the R350,000 Betting World Algoa Cup. The Grade 3 race is
run over 2000m on the turf track.
Tarry’s two runners are Orchestrated, to be ridden by S’manga Khumalo, and
Stonehenge, who will have Donavan Mansour aboard. Orchestrated has won four
of his 15 starts and has placed on another eight occasions. The son of Jay
Peg is one of those horses who performs well on the sand and on the turf.
This could be a shrewd move by Tarry because if, as has happened before,
inclement weather results in the meeting being moved to the Polytrack, he
has a horse who could win on either surface. Orchestrated four wins have
been over 1600m and 1700m and he has yet to prove he stays 2000m. In fact,
the last time he raced over the trip he was beaten 8.25 lengths by stable
companion Stonehenge.
However, Orchestrated did run well enough in the Listed Aquanaut Handicap
over 2450m at Turffontein in heavy going when a 4.25-length fourth behind
Cool Chardonnay.
In the Algoa Cup he is well drawn at No 2 and has just 52.5kg to carry.
Stonehenge has raced 11 times for two wins and four places but his best
effort came in the Listed Derby Trial over 2000m at Turffontein last season
when he finished a 2.25-length second behind Legal Eagle. Unfortunately
Stonehenge has drawn No 14 but over this distance that should not be too
much of a disadvantage.
Justin Snaith saddles three runners in Krambambuli, Current Event and
Masterly, while Glen Kotzen sends out Political Playboy and Gone Baby Gone.
There are two other visiting trainers with runners in the main event.
Vaughan Marshall has sent Gothic while the Mike Bass yard will be bringing
Mountain Master. MJ Byleveld and Grant van Niekerk are the respective
jockeys on the two runners.
Top weight is local star Gogetthesheriff, trained by Jacques Strydom and to
be ridden by Raymond Danielson. They have been allotted 61kg and will jump
from barrier No 8. The five-year-old son of Go Deputy has won seven of his
14 starts since arriving in Port Elizabeth, of which six have been on the
Polytrack.

One of Port Elizabeth's biggest race, the Gr 3 R350,000 Betting World Algoa
Cup over 2000m to be run on Sunday (October 25), has attracted an
intriguing field of 15 this year and the handicap event, which is
characterised by a cavalry charge for the line in which no quarter is
given, is sure to be as exciting as ever.
The meeting has become known as the friendly city's best family day out and
there wil be the usual myriad of on course entertainment and fine fare
provided for all ages as well as lucky draws throughout the day.
The good news for punters is that there is a R500,000 Pick 6 carryover
which will lead to an estimated pool of R2,1 million.
There is also a R100,000 quartet carryover for the big race estimated to
reach over R500 000.
The organisers have landed a coup by securing the renowned South African
comedian/singer/mc/drummer Gino Fabbri to partner the chief MC Selwyn
Willis.
The last five runnings of the Algoa Cup have been won by Cape Town raiders.
This year there are four raiders from Cape Town, one each from the Justin
Snaith, Vaughan Marshall,Mike Bass and Glen Kotzen yards. Snaith also
contests with two of his Port Elizabeth satellite yard runners and
Cape-based trainer Glen Kotzen also has a runner from his PE satellite
yard. National Champion trainer Sean Tarry raids with two runners from the
Highveld. The remaining six runners will carry the hopes of Port
Elizabethans, who will be desperate to bring the trophy home.

Below are the pen pictures of all the runners:

Gogetthesherriff, who will be ridden by regular jockey Raymond Danielson
from draw 8, is the reigning East Cape Polytrack Horse a Of The Year and in
his first start this season he beat the overall East Cape Horse Of The
Year, Sir Duke, at level weights on the turf over 1400m. The gelding is
typical of a Go Deputy male in that he only came into his own as a
four-year-old and he continues to thrive as a five-year-old. He is unbeaten
in three starts this season, including one on the poly over 1900m, so he
should stay the trip but he does have a big weight of 61,5kg to carry.

Krambambuli finished a 4,85 length fourth in last seasons Gr 1 Investec
Cape Derby over this trip and showed in his last start over 1800m at
Durbanville, when running on strongly to beat his useful stablemate
Readytogorightnow, that he will be at his best this season. He has to carry
57,5kg from draw 9, but will be ridden by national log leading jockey
Andrew Fortune and will attempt to become the sixth successive Cape Town
raider to win the race.

Gothic also raids from the Cape and is 1,5kg better off with Krambambuli
for a 3,9 length beating over 1800m last time out. This consistent stayer
would prefer further but trainer Vaughan Marshall and jockey MJ Byleveld
won the race together with subsequent J&B Met winner Hill Fifty Four in
2012 and this six-year-old Silvano gelding comes in fresh, having his
second run after a six month layoff, and is also drawn well.

Political Playboy is a brave one-eyed-horse who is 3,5kg better off with
Gogetthesherrifffor a recent one length beating over 1800m on the
polytrack, which gives him a shout. He was beaten 4,5 lengths in last
year's race off a merit rating of 96 and now has a merit rating of 92, but
he does now have a tougher draw.

Symbolik is one of the leading local hopes and is most interesting on his
first try over this trip as he was an easy winner over 1800m in his
penultimate start and his full-brother Kalmia has won twice over 2400m. He
is 3,5kg better off with Gogetthesherriff for a recent 1,5 length beating
on the polytrack and has in form Karl Zechner up from draw ten.

Kalamein is last season's East Cape Three-year-old male of the year and
this classy sort from the yard of East Cape champion trainer Alan Greeff
looks capable of rising above his current merit rating of 92, so will be a
big runner over a suitable distance under East Cape champion jockey Greg
Cheyne, although the downside is a very wide draw.

Zestful's three runs to date in Port Elizabeth have been disappointing, but
on the bright side he has come down three points in the merit ratings. The
Spectrum gelding is drawn well, but there is a slight question mark about
him staying this trip.

Current Event stays further but is effective over this trip too. He looks
to have enjoyed an ideal preparation and is well drawn with a light weight,
so will have many supporters and would not be a surprise winner.

Mountain Master has not won for over a year but has come down to an
attractive merit rating and from a pole position draw over an ideal
distance with Grant van Niekerk up he is another Cape raider who will be a
big threat.

Orchestrated is one of two horses being sent down from the Highveld by
national champion trainer Sean Tarry. He is distance suited and proved in
his last start over 1800m on the sand that he had benefitted from a rest,
so he is a big runner with former national champion jockey S'Manga Khumalo
up from a plum draw of two.

Taarish is the dark horse of the race as he has a lot of talent and is
distance suited and lightly weighted. The big question is whether he will
jump on terms as he often loses his race at the start. He also has a tricky
draw to contend with.

Masterly has snuck into the handicap with the minimum weight of 52kg having
won four in a row on the polytrack, all over this sort of trip, which saw
him being raised to an 87 merit rating. In May he lost a polytrack handicap
event over 2200m off a merit rating of 57, which suggests his recent
improvement is not only due to a liking for the poly, so he is a most
interesting contender. He has an astute rider in Keagan de Melo and a plum
draw of three.

Gone Baby Gone could earn a cheque on best form, although he does often
flatter to deceive. He is 0,5kg under sufferance but has an astute rider
aboard in Craig Zackey and can by no means be ignored from a good draw of
seven.

Stonehenge is the second of the Tarry raiders and has a tough task at the
weights as he is 2kg under sufferance according to official merit ratings.
He also has a wide draw to overcome. However on the bright side he is
distance suited, will come in nice and fresh after an encouraging 1800m run
following a three month layoff and, as a lightly raced horse, he could
still be improving.

Silent Partner has won over this trip before but looks to be past his best
and has a very tough task at the weights being 4kg under sufferance
according to official merit ratings.
