Appies , where are they?
9 years 8 months ago
There seems to be less and less appies about these days?
And with the older jocks very stale where will the fresh blood come from?
In 2010 there was 51 appies with rides, last year 40,this year so far only 24 appies have had rides( early stages of the season ) and some of them have used their claims..
Has there been a decision made to cut back?

There are enough Appies for me - There are way too many jocks that can't get rides already and a few claimers that I see riding now should really find alternate employment as even at claim 4kg's they are battling to win races after years in the saddle.

Bob the scary thing is that the worst appie 20 years ago would be better than 90% of the current crop

We need no more than 100 jockeys in SA. To maintain that we need about 3 jockeys to graduate from the appie ranks annually.
Current successful jockeys who were appies in 2010 season include G v Niekerk, A Domeyer, D Mansour, J P v d Merwe, K de Melo, A Mgudlwa.
D Dillon has come through from the 2014 apprentices.
Of the current appies, there are 5-10 who look capable of making it as jockeys, so the pipeline looks adequate.
I would agree that there are no current appies who look like exceptional talents.
The issue of people on average becoming taller and heavier is the challenge for the future.
