RYAN MOORE made a significant step towards a return to action on Wednesday morning when riding work at Newmarket for the first time since sustaining a neck injury in July.

The three-time champion jockey was back in tandem with trainer Sir Michael Stoute, putting Sun Chariot hope Integral through her paces on Racecourse Side.

Moore, who rode in first and second lot, has been on the sidelines since suffering a blow to his neck in the stalls at Newmarket's July meeting.

Uncertainty has surrounded the rider’s comeback date but should he get the all clear to return during the backend of the campaign he could well have plenty to look forward to.

Earlier this month connections of last year's Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist confirmed the ride in this year's race remains open to the jockey and there is the possibility of appearing at the Breeders' Cup days before the Flemington showpiece.

Ted Durcan, who rode work with Moore on Wednesday morning, said: "Ryan told me he's in A1 nick. I don’t know when he will be coming back but he looks pretty fit."

Oliver booked for Snow Sky

Whenever he returns, Moore, who joined forces with Stoute for a spot of commentating on the Rowley Mile at the weekend, will not be riding Snow Sky in his Melbourne Cup warm-up as Damien Oliver has already been snapped up.

The Royal Ascot winner will leave for Australia on Thursday where his first intended engagement is the Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup on October 17, a contest for which he was handed an opening quote of 20-1 by Paddy Power.

Stoute said: "Snow Sky's programme is that he is to fly out of Heathrow on Thursday and if everything goes to plan on arrival then he'll run in the Caulfield Cup. We have already booked Damien Oliver for the ride."

Race rusty Craig, don't expect much from him after such a bad injury. Most other riders would have taken another month at least to recover. No comment from this side re your comic book hero
