Racing to honour Madiba
9 years 10 months ago
Racing. It's a Rush is proud to announce that Kenilworth, Fairview and Turffontein Racecourses will be honouring the memory of Madiba over the Mandela Day weekend through the 67 minutes initiative.
Fairview’s Friday meeting will see the handover of kitchen appliances which have been raised in conjunction with Mark and Dorrie Sham to the Mickey Mouse Creche. Staff from the Sham yard will be donating monies from their own pockets in respect of the 67 minutes. Keeping in line with the weekend’s festivities, Fairview Racecourse’s staff will be heading to the Carehaven Psyciatric Centre in Port Elizabeth armed with supplies and will be serving lunch to the centre’s patients.
Kenilworth’s Mandela Day race meeting, which features the Gr 3 Final Fling Stakes, takes place this Saturday to honour an icon who undoubtedly would have approved of the heart-warming charity drive associated with the event. Active participation in the charity drive by on course racegoers could make it a day to cherish, especially when considering the adage “It is better to give than to receive”. Kenilworth Racing staff members have already been hard at work collecting food, blankets and clothes for the Haven Night Shelter in Wynberg which will be handed over during the race meeting. Haven Night Shelter was selected as it provides temporary shelter, physical care, social welfare and family re-unification services to adult homeless persons within the vicinity of Kenilworth.
Mandela Day commemorates the birthday of the great leader and the staff of the Big T will be spreading the cheer at Cotland’s Turffontein where stationery and gift packs will be provided to the residents whilst lunch will be served to staff, volunteers and children.
The regional racing communities are encouraged to get involved through time or donations and can be in touch with the following:
Fairview Racecourse – Karin le Roux (041 372 1859)
Kenilworth Racecourse – Jenna Adams (021 700 1600)
Turffontein Racecourse – Cherise TemTem (011 681 1796)

Not much advertising from the Racing, it's a rush regarding 67min initiative. Nothing on their facebook page or twitter and their website is under construction.
