Grooms Soccer Turffontein Sunday
9 years 11 months ago
This Sunday, 28 June will see a different form of competition at
Turffontein Racecourse as the groom’s soccer tournament kicks off at 09h00
on the infield. The idea of a grooms’ soccer league emanated from the Vaal
Racecourse and was driven specifically by trainer Johan van Eck, who
approached the Racing Association for support of the groom’s soccer league.
The annual Emerald Cup race meeting’s golf day raised funds in aid of the
soccer league including soccer fields and kit for the players. “This has
now come to fruition and we are excited about the kick-off of the
tournament this Sunday” commented the Racing Association’s CEO Larry
Wainstein. “The tournament, which we are confident will become an annual
event, will be rotated between Turffontein, Randjesfontein and Vaal
training centres in order to give each centre the opportunity to host the
series”.
The training centres will be represented by the Vaal’s “Blazers FC”,
Randjesfontein’s “FC United”, the Turffontein Heroes and then the almighty
Handlers. Sport and in particular soccer is an ideal way to bring people
together and the competition will encourage camaraderie amongst the grooms
who are already in a very competitive environment in that of horseracing.
