Why The July
9 years 11 months ago
Being a Durban boy, I can say for sure that the July is a most special and unique event.
People that dont give a damn about horse racing the whole year will be standing in line early morning to place bets on the July. People that wont go near a race track normally will suddenly fork out hundreds of Rands to go to the July.
The days leading up to the July are filled with tension and excitement and just about every single person you meet has an interest and wants a "tip".
Personally, its the only race that keeps me up the night before!!!
Is it the same in JHb/ Capetown for the July?
Is it the same in JHb/Cape on Met day/Summer Cup
If so, I would be surprised. If not, then why?

The weeks leading up to the July is my favorite time of year, that's all that is being spoken about on the race course, at the gallops even at our weekly card game. Did you hear this and the some of the stories you hear are classic, I don't like this game I LOVE IT :woohoo:

In SA the JULY is special as an out of towner the JULY beats the MET and Summer Cup from the taxi drivers to the hotel staff the vibe is second to none.
You just have to look at the threads running on this forum to compare the interest in the July.

Yes, its a great race but personally its not a good day for the average punter to bet. The lines, crowd & incorrect bets taken really spoil a fantastic day. Unless u in a good box its difficult to actually gamble on course

With the introduction of the automated self help tote terminals where you place your bets yourself has made things easier the last 3 years. Those queues are always short and there is a person to help you if you need assistance and they are quite efficient. Also with technology things has gotten alot easier taking bets through your phone or phoning in your bet.
