Derby Viewing figures at a new low
10 years 1 week ago
pity
from racingpost
THE audience for Channel 4's Investec Derby broadcast on Saturday slumped to a new low when it peaked at 1.465 million and averaged 729,000.
While the percentage of audience share was marginally up on 2014, the viewing figures - with the peak down from last year's 1.549m - will come as another blow to the broadcaster.
The Derby attracted only around 45 per cent of the 3.3 million audience that tuned in to watch the BBC's last Derby in 2012, despite the attraction of Frankie Dettori - racing's most recognisable face - on board an unbeaten favourite.
There was slightly better news in the figures for Friday's Oaks, which peaked at 632,000, compared to 558,000 a year earlier, but the Derby ratings are particularly untimely since negotiations with rights holders are only just around the corner with Channel 4's exclusive four-year terrestrial television deal up for renewal at the end of 2016.

What happened in 2011 to increase viewership to reverse trend that was in place?

Would have to say the quality of coverage was world class and it must be a concern for Investec who have done a fantastic job

My immediate thought is that Saturday is very TV competitive.
When it was on a wednesday it was on it's own.

I see the Belmont on the contrary was the third best on preliminarily viewing since 1988 - I suppose AP' Hype and the TC brought fans back
