PE Groom strike? Big SHIT
10 years 4 months ago - 10 years 4 months ago
Big trouble in PE,the grooms have threatened to all strike( and rightly so )
Seemingly most of their accomodation is disgusting,No water,Electricity or even a Shitter
There was a meeting on Friday and Monday to ty and sort it out between Phum and the grooms.
Phum own the land so seemingly it`s their responsibility, but phumelela want the the trainers to take some responibility(Seemingly when Arlington closed Phumelela paid the trainers R3000 per groom to move them but the money has vanished in most cases)
Seemingly the grooms have been speaking about this for months and nothing was done
This cant go on in this day and age!

So it's a situation where the animals are taken better care of than their caretakers?
Now let's use the forum to stir some S....T , this can be compared to the other thread where animals are neglected.

Without knowing all the facts I am hesitant to side with the grooms as these facilities did not start out in the apparent condition that they are in now.
At what point should grooms start accepting some responsibility for looking after their facilities and to what extent have they contributed to the current state of the facility?
If it is years of neglect and non-maintenance on the part of the owner of the facility it becomes a cause to support, but until then lets get all the facts first.
Horses cannot look after themselves in captivity but humans have a great deal of choice of how we maintain and look after provided facilities.

Dead right Bob. I dont know why any employer would put themselves in a situation like this ? (providing housing to their employees) Unless it is part of the grooms contract of employ then this is absolutely unecceptable and needs to be addressed immediately.

grooms were taken from a perfect living accomadation at Arlington and Walmer camp where there was elec and water and outside lighting..Fairview camp started with nothing not even 1 toilet or rubbish bin to put there rubbish.Go back to where the 3 k went ,phum thought easy way out .

Bob, do the grooms get a slice of the stakes pie? Considering that they are nannies to the ponies with 1 groom handling 2, imagine what a nice Christmas pot for the grooms if the slice of the pie is accumulated in a fund.
If around 2.50 %, then maybe the induna or head groom can negotiate for a cleaning company to service the hostels on a daily basis.
Also electricity and water supply can be restored, but please note it must be hot water as the E.Cape winters are mighty cold.
Portable loos can be hired long time, with several services per week.

I think this matter deserves all the facts before speculation and this should come from the trainers. What if some of the trainers gave their grooms 3k each and now it's gone? What if some trainers didn't? Why would Phumelela pay the trainers the money without a follow-up plan? Since when do grooms get accommodation paid for or is this just in PE?
Jockey 10% plus a present when it's a graded race
Trainer 10% plus extra when it is a graded race plus 10% when you sell your horse
Groom 0 (2,5%) plus a present whenever the horse wins & a braai and presents when its a graded race.....
Taking into account that when you pay 120k for a yearling that is trained for 8-12 months before it runs at 8k a month, and ends up a piece of crap that nobody gives you a percentage back for..... does anyone want to own race horses??????

Agree with Tigershark about the facts and also the point about "no follow up"
I know I harp on about lack of management at "P" and this is sounds like another example ................you cannot just act and assume that all will end well .............management is ensuring that the final outcome is as envisaged, by monitoring the entire process.
