Good point Pirates and the inconsistencies were glaring because the two-year-old award was apparently decided by subjective opinion simply on who the best horse was and so was the stayer award (Gr 2 winner Hot Ticket considered a better candidate than a horse that completed a Triple Crown when winning the Gr 1 SA Derby), but suddenly for the miler award the prestige of races won took precedence as the Queen's Plate winner Capetown Noir was considered better than Beach Beauty whom he met three times in the season and was beaten all three times!

I think we need to take out the subjectivity - Now that PE horse for Mr Fabricius - How can he get to a MR of 120 just like The Vaal Sand Champion at 126 that never even won a Graded race I think - Or that Superstar in Kim that won all those races on the trot for Mr Miller and Mrs Slack but battled to win a Mr 70 at the Vaal - I think in many cases our MR system is Geographically skewed and that is not accurate as the best horse at Kim is not going to be the best horse at the Vaal and vice versa - Lucky the better Graded races are run on grass so at least we have a level playing field for the ratings.
I like the idea of giving points to certain races especially for younger horses - the races later in the season should have more weight as the horses have matured more and have learn't to race a little better. If an owner wants to win an Equus he must chase it or if he decides his horse must not be pushed then that's his call - All we need is the two-year-old that has amassed the most Graded points for the season(and MUST have won a GRADE 1 or 2 RACE )
This same system should be applied to races like the July where we often have horses being forced in subjectively - Why should horse A have to race against top horses to get July entering rating and then another can avoid many of the top three-year-old races and get put into the race without having the MERIT rating.
