So, straight to racing section to see how my PA at Greyville did yesterday as i was playing golf at Royal which ended late after many whisky's.

I read with interest the article on Majmu and then came across the comment "vindicated her award of champion 2yr old".......... WHAT TWAK

If journalists want to comment about vindication then at least tell the whole story. Now don't get me wrong i think Majmu is a machine but there is no way anyone can justify giving TWO YEAR OLD CHAMPION to any horse that does not win a GRADE 1. It is an award for two year old's not THREE year old's and if a journo wants to suck up to the connections then phone them don't vomit it out in your article as "vindication" when it could only be justification..... Majmu did not win a Grade 1 as a two year old.

Some of the best horses in history have been injured and had their careers cut short but they do not get awarded "Champion" for not racing no matter how good they could have been.

But then again i am talking about the South African Equus awards where even a Whippet could win with the right connections and it wouldn't be questioned.

I think I wrote that article and certainly didnt put the word vindicated in the main body. Was it in the caption?
I am one of Majmu's biggest admirers but was also one of the most outspoken critics of the award.
In fact I dedicated two feature articles to the subject, which I could post if you want. She's brilliant but nothing she does in her career will change my opinion on that award!

You all know my feelings about the awards and what weight they carry. Triple kopdoek and all and all. Surely grade 1's should be the deciding factor nothing else. Awards are given on past performances not on possible future accomplishments. Awards should never be subjective and therefore a points system has to be implimented. Appologies years after the case carry even less weight !

Why do we need a panel? This is not the Oscars - We have a Graded Race program and an MR System - That is all you need - No secret ballots and cloak and dagger - Insane approach when the tools are there before you.

I think the panel is Malherbe, Kritsiotis, Hawkins, Davis, Harrison, Garner, Smith and Lipps. Larry Weinstein is then the tie-breaking voter.

Hilton you can't use the MR system for this category surely - Two-year-olds improve by miles as you know and also there are limited races on which to judge them(and they are a very small part of the RACED population) - You have to use the Graded Races as a benchmark for these younger animals. What's the point in having a Graded Race program if you don't acknowledge it when awarding accolades?

mr h im not saying what you must use but seeing who was on the panel I would have taken 1 to 5 majmu would have won the award ..let me play devils advocate then taking your question into consideration how come that pe sprinter who won 33 races and had a mr of around 120 never won an equus award or I don't recall was he ever nominated for one?
