Satwa Story, Tahaamah and Price Is Truth Score for Zabeel Stables

Satish Seemar and his stable jockey, Richard Mullen, dominated the Dubai Duty Free meeting at Meydan Racecourse on Thursday night when combining to land an easy treble.

Arguably the highlight was the ultra impressive victory of Price Is Truth who had the 1200m handicap in the bag with over 200m left to run. Mullen was able to ease his mount down in the final 100m, after a similarly easy victory at Sharjah on his previous start.

“He won very easily at Sharjah the other day,” said Mullen. “The dirt has proved the key to him as we hoped it would as he always trained well on it in the mornings.

“We will have to see what the handicapper does now but it would be nice to think he is still improving.”

Earlier, a 400 day absence from the racecourse was not enough to prevent Tahaamah from making a winning start to his career with Seemar in a 2000m handicap.

Formerly with Godolphin, Tahaamah has not been seen since winning at Nottingham in October 2013, on heavy ground. The different underfoot conditions at Meydan clearly did not bother him and he was always going well under stable jockey, Richard Mullen.

The pair hit the front turning for home and were always holding the challenge of Henry Clay.

“He has been off a while,” said Mullen. “He is a nice horse though and we were hopeful coming here as he works well on the dirt at home.

“He should come on for that run and hopefully build on it.”

Mullen was saying virtually the same thing after the following 1400m handicap on which he steered the Seemar-trained Satwa Story to a comfortable victory.

He too was having his first start for the yard having left Godolphin but, on this occasion, he was winning after a 438 day break.

“As with the other horse, this was a very nice win” said Mullen. “We had to be hopeful as his work was good and his form in the book was good.

“He is bred to relish dirt and handled it exceptionally well. It was probably not a great race but he can only beat the opposition on the day.”

Seemar said: “It has been a great evening and credit to the whole team. We have been very patient with these horses and this is a great reward for everyone involved.”

They were denied a quartet of winners when Shihab was unable to get past the Musabah Al Muhairi-trained Muhtaram under Silvestre de Sousa in the concluding 1600m handicap.

The official feature on the card was a 1600m handicap and Le Bernardin, trained by Ali Rashid Al Raihe, was the comfortable winner under stable apprentice, Saeed Al Mazrouei.

Remarkably, it was another former Godolphin inmate making a first start for a new yard. In this instance it was the horse’s comeback after 630 days.

Al Mazrouei said: “This horse was a Grade 3 winner in America and had been pleasing everyone at home. The dirt was never going to be an issue and the whole yard was pretty confident beforehand.”

The meeting opened with a 1600m maiden and State Law, saddled by Doug Watson, built on his excellent 1400m third of a fortnight ago, driven home by stable jockey, Pat Dobbs.

The winner was never far off the pace before being set clear by Dobbs 400m out. With 100m to run, eventual runner-up Year Of Glory (also Seemar and Mullen) looked the likely winner but Dobbs’ mount responded to pressure and found plenty.

“I probably hit the front too soon,” said Dobbs. “However, when I asked him he really stuck his head out and stayed on gamely. There should be more to come.”

Meydan closes out 2014 with a special New Year’s Eve racecard

Trainer Mike de Kock sends out Journeyman in hopes of bigger races in 2015

Meydan racecourse has the honour of staging the final UAE meeting of 2014 with a six race card scheduled for Wednesday with an earlier than usual start time of 6.10pm for the New Year’s Eve meeting.

The night will feature the return to local action for South African training legend, Mike De Kock, who has three runners on the card, including Journeyman in the most valuable race on the card, a 1400m handicap.

“He had three runs here last season,” said De Kock. “He is ready for a race and we want to try him on the dirt with a Carnival campaign in mind.”

Journeyman will face nine rivals, including two trained by Doug Watson for HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The owner’s retained jockey, Dane O’Neill, will ride Marching Time, leaving stable jockey, Pat Dobbs, to partner stable companion, Washaar who will be making his local/dirt debut.

“Marching Time has been in great form this season and should run another big race,” said Watson. “The draw could have been kinder but he is in great form and deserves a bit of luck after three good seconds.

“Washaar has some really good juvenile form but has been off now over a year. Basically, we just need to try him on the dirt so we know how to campaign him looking ahead.

“He is fit and healthy and we are looking forward to running him.”

Sheikh Hamdan will also be represented by Mundahesh, to be ridden by Royston Ffrench for trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe.

With the Musabah Al Muhairi team firing on all cylinders it would be folly to ignore the claims of Atlantic Brave under stable jockey, Silvestre De Sousa who rode six winners last weekend.

All six of the horse’s wins have been achieved on the dirt at Jebel Ali and he seems prepared for the test on the new Meydan Racecourse surface.

Bannock had one start for Godolphin at last year’s Dubai World Cup Carnival and makes his first start since, having joined Ahmad bin Harmash.

He will serve as the second ride in the UAE for apprentice Louis Steward.

Yaa Wayl represents HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, trainer Dhruba Selvaratnam and stable jockey Oisin Murphy.

He disappointed in his last race but had run well on his reappearance and seasonal debut. A month off may well have freshened him up and he certainly has to be feared in a wide open contest.

Satish Seemar and Richard Mullen are another duo enjoying a great season and are represented by Double Dealer with stable apprentice, Marc Monaghan, on stablemate Signs In The Sand.

However Double Dealer fares, Seemar and Mullen look to hold serious claims in the second race, a 1400m handicap, with Cross Grain. Speaking at a Jebel Ali press conference last week, Mullen highlighted his mount as a horse to follow and the Meydan race looks a good opportunity.

Similarly, however Watson’s runners get on in the feature, his One Man Band looks to hold serious claims in a 1600m handicap on the card with Pat Dobbs aboard.
