Emerald Cup Preview

The small town of Viljoensdrif, in the Free State, will be abuzz with excitement this Saturday as Africa’s richest race on sand; the Grade 2 Emerald Cup takes place on the Vaal racecourse. Since its inception in 2005, the event has been sponsored by Emerald Resort and Casino and for the first time in its short history, the prize money on offer will now be R1 million. A star-studded field of 14 sand and turf performers will contest the handicap event to be run over 1450m and a thrilling finish is expected. Unlike last year, the weights are more compressed with the joint top weight set at 60kgs whilst bottom weight belongs to the first selection, the Mike Azzie trained six-year old son of Strike Smartly, BROOKS-CLUB (50kgs).
