Vets bills

One of my horses has just had a knee chip removed. Shame ! The bill for my horses op (special rate for early settlement)(thanks) cost me more than my sons two op's on his knee last year at Medi Clinic.
Being an owner can be fun, but these vet bills are killing our game more than all the other crap going on in our industry put together.

Haven't owners been complaining about vet bills since Pontius was a pilot?

Vets bills are one of the biggest problems in racing. The mark up on drugs etc is huge and what they charge for procedures is high but they are allowed to charge these fees as they are under what the Vets council fee structure allows. In their defence the horse vets are not in the same division as many small animal practices. Some in my area make you pay a deposit of R1500 before they will even look at the dog/cat. They will in most case's spend all of that at least! If I call out a vet in the middle of the night for a colic for instance, they come straight away and not a word is said about deposits or anything. Get straight in and fix the patient if possible.

C no argument there, I compared my son's op's by a world renown knee specialist with whom I have no history and hopefully no future.
An example of a small item (rubber gloves) +_ R30 a pair, my wife bought a box of 100 for our dogs at Clicks for under R100. There is no justification for such a mark -up.
Nobody would dispute the vets loyalty or what a brilliant job they do, but really man ?!

The gloves are for open wallet surgery and has to be carefully removed via the owners arsehole

the mark up is astronomical. I have a vet friend, yes I do have friends, who showed me what the distributor pays for a product from the producer. The producer sold the product for 57 pence to the distributor who sold it on to the vet for £4.29 who then sold it on to the dog owner for an incredible £12.99.

Just to let you know, that the non-sterile latex gloves you buy over the counter at Clicks are in *no way* the same, or even similar, to the thicker, sterile, gamma irradiated, individually wrapped surgical gloves.

Vet bills are expensive, and shopping around for quotes on surgery is your best bet. You would be surprised at how competitive the practices can be in this regard. Unless the horse is a good handicapper or has shown some serious promise, I would not consider surgery for a degenerative condition that will probably reoccur at a later stage.

I love the mileage charged on some accounts....,comes to see 30 horses on a day in a yard and everyone gets billed....,and most times not proportionally.....

yes sadly this is true - really dampens the spirit of the game and the owners pockets
