Always good to hear the big guys views as let's be honest he is certainly qualified to comment, it would also be in order for the other big players to reply with some statement to either confirm or reduce fears the way the industry is going as at the moment my mind is boggling on many fronts ( probably a good time to have a racing forum) :S

Great letter Barry.
We all know that there are 3 owners who own shares in P. They are trying to gain as much value from their shares and control all aspects of racing.

Funny that the TBA complex is one of the few not owned by the operators

I am holding my breath waiting for the first minion to utter the immortal words " This is not good for the game."

.....I too have studied every aspect of the TBA....and it has had its flaws for many a year.....the CTS wake up was call was not heeded in time.....and they acted too slowly to prevent themselves from landing in the situation they find themselves in....I really feel for them.... as it will take more than a miracle ....a once proud racing institution to be buried just like Gosforth Park, Newmarket, Bloemfontein and Arlington Race courses....

It is definitely not too late, but the leaders need to get their act together and address what is wrong ASAP. There are enough strong supporters of the TBA to right the ship.

I agree with Barry, but are these supporters strong enough to stand up... I hope so.

Excuse my ignorance in this matter, I do have a few questions.
Surely in business it is survival of the fittest ?
Why should Western Cape breeders pay these ridiculous prices to take horses to the TBA sales ? (out of loyalty !!??)
What is the reason this is not good for the game ? (competion normally is good)
Does a breeder still have a choice where to sell their babies ? (yes)
Is the problem not just the dates ?

To me this is a good wake-up call for the TBA to get their house in order and to trade in a free open market.
Am I missing something ? Much to do about nothing in my opinion.

....yes all good and well for open competition and it made sense for CTS to start up in the Cape to service Cape breeders as in the past the TBA Cape sale around Met time was poorly stocked yet a buyers bargain....mainly for Cape Breeders to get early pocket change
and keep the better bred for the inland nationals....this all changed with marketing a Grander sale to tap international buyers and local big money boys attending the Met....imo
this early sale is too soon in the year as the babies are hardly off the mothers tit and very difficult to judge half grown yearlings ..... and I just hate those wooden boxes that are coated with high VOC substances' in the middle of high temperature Cape summer....then once paid for have to go back to farms to mature and get the much needed schooling....

Now CTS wants the whole pie not only to hold Cape sales but challenge the TBA National yearling sale by holding the same and also have a RTR sale here and their own in Cape Town....as Barry says we do not have the numbers....not enough horses and not enough buyers now to be split between rivalling sales parties....for this reason the TBA remained unchallenged until there was an upswing in global demand for horse flesh....but as soon as the global financial markets started crashing in 2008 the fall out ripples only hit us after 2010...and while other global thoroughbred markets have since recovered....we are still in financial crisis and our buyers have dwindled to a point that having sales companies with little synergy fighting for the same dwindling buyer pool is a recipe for one to capitulate and the other replace it as the monopoly.... :S
