Ryan Moore the best jockey in the world
10 years 8 months ago
In this piece from yesterday's RPSunday, Peter Thomas profiles one of the world's finest jockeys, Ryan Moore, and discovers what makes him such a formidable rider. Pick up RPSunday for more great reads every week
AS THE field turned for home and fanned out across the Sandown straight, there were decisions to be made that would probably decide the winner of the 2007 Coral-Eclipse from the boys.
Rain had had its way with the Esher turf and left the eight riders with a choice: stick to the farside rail and slug it out with the field, or twist, take the gamble and hope you don’t bust in front of a national TV audience in one of the biggest races of the season.
Ryan Moore took the gamble, but it’s doubtful he saw the prized Group 1 contest as a game of chance. He had arrived for work early enough to walk the course and had been smart enough to do so in the company of John Francome; between the two fiercely independent minds, they were unlikely to confuse the easy option with the right one.
The previous afternoon, the stands side had been the quicker side and the pair decided unanimously that this was still the case, so when the time came for action to take over from words, Moore rode what to some may have looked like the brave man’s race, but to him seemed the only race available to a fellow who had done his homework. He tacked across to the near rail – gently at first, to avoid alerting the enemy, then wholeheartedly – and hoped the sacrifice of distance would be more than compensated for by the relative soundness of the drying surface.
The consummate professional had done his sums right and deep inside the final furlong it became apparent that the battle on the far side of the track, between the 4-7 favourite, Derby winner Authorized, and the 4-1 second favourite, champion miler George Washington, was a mere sideshow on the fringes of the masterclass unfolding in front of the grandstand.
Notnowcato prevailed by a length and a half and Moore immediately proclaimed him the best mile-and-a-quarter horse in the country; those who had watched the race were not so sure that the previous year’s Juddmonte International winner had earned that accolade, but they were convinced they had seen a genius at work.

As I said on a previous thread the british are the most overrated jocks in the world, Frankie had to show your boys how to win a few features all in one day, would take your top boys 2 years to do the same
