Pomodoro wows at Stallion Day
Klawervlei Stud’s exciting new stallion Pomodoro debuted to rave reviews at last weekend’s Klawervlei Stallion day.
Pomodoro, who had arrived at the farm just a few weeks earlier, looked in great shape, as he prepares to begin his stud career.
Described by former trainer Sean Tarry as the most athletic colt he had ever trained, Pomodoro certainly looked the part as he paraded in front of admiring crowds.
Klawervlei’s John Koster told guests of his longstanding desire to stand a son of mighty sire Jet Master at the farm, and, in Pomodoro, Klawervlei will be standing one of the best sons of the now deceased champion.
Few young stallions retire to stud with more going for them this season than Pomodoro.
An exceptionally talented and versatile horse, Pomodoro earned over R3.6 million, competing successfully at the top level throughout his career.
He scored a memorable victory in South Africa’s most storied horse-race, when landing the Gr1 Vodacom Durban July over a star studded field. Amongst those beaten by Pomodoro in the 2012 July were Gr1 winners Solo Traveller (Cape Guineas), Gold Onyx (Premier’s Champion Stakes), Beach Beauty (dual Equus Champion), English Garden (SA Classic), Pierre Jourdan (SA Classic), Royal Bencher (SA Derby), Top Seller (Cape Derby), and Jackson (Cape Derby, Daily News 2000, Champions Cup).
Also victorious in the Gr1 SA Derby and two other major feature races, Pomodoro won or placed in a total of six Grade 1 races.
As famed for his versatility as well as his talent, Pomodoro won from 1160m to 2450m – and, like all top-class performers, had a devastating turn of foot.
Klawervlei’s latest recruit also has a superb pedigree. He is by seven times Champion Sire Jet Master, whose 21 Grade 1 winners include champions Pocket Power, Mythical Flight, J J The Jet Plane, Past Master, Ebony Flyer, River Jetez and In The Fast Lane.
Pomodoro (who is by a champion out of a champion) is one of four stakes horses produced by Equus Broodmare Of The Year Golden Apple. Herself winner of the Gr2 Gosforth Park Fillies Guineas, Golden Apple is a daughter of South Africa’s dominant champion broodmare sire Northern Guest.
Like one of history’s greatest stallions, Danzig, Pomodoro is a direct descendant of the mare Old Orange Girl.
Pomodoro, who will receive an excellent first book of mares, begins his stud career at a fee of R20 000.
