Backing horses at single figure prices in big York handicaps might not always be the wisest of strategies, especially one that was reported to have a breathing problem last time, but Flow (14:20) finds himself in a weak-looking heat for the grade and there’s still some legs in his current mark of 92, especially on the basis of his run last time. The four year old is more unexposed than most here, with only eight starts to date and importantly, has course form. He was a narrow runner-up over further here last season, off a 9lb lower mark but he’s improved bundles since then, and still looks capable of improvement. His handicap mark is unchanged from his last effort at Newmarket over 1m2f last month. He wasn’t beaten far, possibly not being suited by the way the race was run (to my eye, race seemed a little muddling). It was a really good race and the form of it looks to be working out nicely, with the winner going really well at Epsom last week. Previous to that, Flow won with plenty in hand at Ripon, as although he didn’t really beat anything like he faces today in a 0-90, he travelled supremely well and looked like he’d win by much further. He only just does enough when asked for his effort, which isn’t always a good thing but it at least means the handicapper can’t go mad and there’s no doubting his attitude either.
Today’s race isn’t as good as it looks on first glance. Fury is almost favourite and that says quite a lot, as he must be one of the most frustrating horses in training. He should have won so many races in his career, but for one reason or another, hasn’t and he’s rightly opposed even with a falling handicap mark. There’s a couple here, such as Tarkhiki which are also on a good mark but that one doesn’t have race fitness and I’d much rather be on Flow today. Although dropped in trip, he travels too well for it to be a problem and the big field and likely strong pace will help in this regard anyway. He’s ran well here in the past, no longer has the services of Ted Durcan on board and has the capable Martin Harley, alongside the fact the handicapper never raised him for his last effort, in a race that will likely work out very well. He should be clear favourite in my book.
Race 2 at York – Flow @ 5/1
