Final field L Jaffee Empress Club Stakes
11 years 2 months ago
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited
This year’s Gauteng Fillies Guineas form will be tested on Friday night, 11
April, with the running of the R1-million L Jaffee Empress Club Stakes over
1600m at Turffontein.
Fillies Guineas winner and runner-up Arcetri Pink and Not Sulking
respectively will take on some of the top-rated members of their sex in the
country, including last year’s Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara winner Cherry On
The Top, KZN Guineas winner Festival Of Fire and Espumanti, runner-up to
Beach Beauty in last year’s Grade 1 Garden Province Stakes.
In addition trainer Dennis Drier is bringing Jet Aglow, who finished a
1.75-length third behind Beach Beauty in the Grade 1 Paddock Stakes at
Kenilworth, up from KwaZulu-Natal. Sean Cormack takes the ride.
Mike de Kock saddles Espumanti and Festival Of Fire and it could be
significant that stable jockey Anthony Delpech has elected to ride
Espumanti. However, it should be noted that Bernard Fayd’Herbe is making
the trip from Cape Town to ride Festival Of Fire.
Cherry On The Top is the highest rated runner but will have her work cut
out to win from barrier No 15. She has not raced since running unplaced in
the Sansui Summer Cup last December. Her last two races have been in open
handicap company but she could improve now that she returns to fillies’
company at weight for age.
Along Came Polly was touched off by Athina in the Grade 1 SA Fillies
Classic after jumping from the widest of draws. This time the Gavin van
Zyl-trained three-year-old is drawn No 3 and must be a lively contender.
S’manga Khumalo takes the ride.

Cherry On The Top and Jet Aglow are worthy of Gr1.

An interesting race, we should get a good idea how the 3 year old fillies compare to the older horses.

For me the 3 yr olds are coming off a hard race last week, so I prefer the older fillies; if Cherry on the Top is back to her beast, even the draw won't stop her, otherwise Jet Aglow
