Hey bro I prefer the Howes / Doug Campbell combo ! He used to ride a horse called barbed wire for Doug when I first started punting, I won lots of money on this horse whenever it ran in Greyville and Gavin rode it. Another good one from the Campbell stable was Bwana Bahati
He made his mistakes but I admired him

Yes, I'm his son. He's doing well..but I'm sure he would be a lot better if he could have his ban rescinded..
I agree we could use him back he could outride most of our present jocks with one hand, he was so talented !!!

There were a few Howes/Dbn trainer combo's that when you saw them you knew you had to include. Howes/Naidoo was powerful near the end of their careers! Another worth a mention for me was Howes/Bestel, could get a good run for your money.
A disgrace he never got another chance, the Powers want nothing of it? - 11 years isn't long enough?
If anyone manages to upload copies of SS races, let us know.

Howes/Bass was also a great combo, when Gav's dad (Lionel I think) was in charge of Phillipi I visited him after an unfortunate accident that left him with 2 broken legs and he had a painting on the wall of a filly that he won many on for Mike Bass, cant recall the name but she was top class..in the painting she had the number 13 saddle cloth and when I asked why 13 Gav told me that she carried that number in a vast majority of her runs..can anyone remember the name of this filly??
Give everything but up!

Being only into SA racing for the last 2-3 years,I can honestly say I've never heard of Gavin Howes. So I googled him and this what came up.
Is it the correct facts and what was the punishment
At Greyville on March 29, Howes weighed out in a big race with 4.5kg (10lb) of lead in a secondary weight cloth, which he hid down a drain in the tunnel between the weighing room and the paddock. However, there were two flaws. The horse, Greenwood, finished second, and Howes was caught trying to recover the missing weight before weighing in.

Winning Form was still in its infancy when it sponsored this match race. I'm sure Winning Form did an article on the race when it celebrated its 20th anniversary. Will try see if we can dig it out the archives.

I still remember the advertising punch line - "Coming to you this Xmas. Santa and the Princess".
