I went to the new top bet outlet in midrand yesterday, they have
30 tellers for soccer bets and 4 tellers for horseracing, all 30
Soccer tellers had long ques , the 4 horse racing tellers were just
Sitting around looking for something to do

In Keith Ho this Am I thought I was mad as the Racing section was half full and all the clerks had customers ...then I saw they were all taking Soccer bets (the Soccer section is always full) and only one guy was studying a newspaper - Nothing you can do but enjoy it while it lasts. Good thing is I never have to wait more than a minute to place a racing bet

Of that there is no doubt ...............however all industries die when the opposition is better managed without any counteraction..........is/was the death of racing inevitable ,or is it being killed?
The thing that continues to confuse me is that the people who's living depends on the survival of the local product, defend the situation ,regardless of what the finances suggest.
The idea that a large corporate will continue to subsidise a loss leader(Being local racing) indefinitely is just naïve!

I think horse racing needs the media to do their bit in creating the hype surrounding it. This is very difficult when all our best horses are leaving our shores. The atmosphere before the big races Met, July etc when the crowds roars as the gates open still gives me goosebumps. Thats what we need. This can only be achieved through the use of our social media's and the main stream media. The whole package of racing has to be sold and can only be done with racing hero's like the Frankel's , Black Caviar's. Household names must be made of our top horses and this can only be done through the media. This will bring the masses back to the courses if only to be part of the hype or as a witness to these living legends. The racing and general public join in at different "times" into a top horses career. Why ? Well because they are not previ to this animal until he/she achieves sucess. We need more hype, we need those hero's. This game is about the HORSE lets make them the starting point. I believe the rest will fall into place.

I guess it doesn't help that predicting the outcome of a Bulls v Sharks game is orders of magnitude easier than picking the quartet of a Pinnacle Stakes race.....

In order to be a successful punter, you *do* actually have to be quite intelligent and **know ** what you're doing...
