So the golden rule nowadays is inside draws on inside track and outside draws on outside track. Van Wyk is one example of many hundreds. I would guess, though, at the two prime reasons for him doing this, by staying away from the field. The first could be that the horse would over race early and pull when next to company and the second could be that the horse would throw in the towel if challenged near the death by another horse.
As for instructions, I dont give them. The reason is because bad jocks cant follow them and dont have a plan b or c and good jocks dont need them, because they will adapt and ride the best race in the circumstances. I simply tell my riders about the horse's tendencies, preferences or quirks.
