They are recorded manually as such, from the TT OB van which links up to the course's CCTV cameras/fibre optic cables from which the fotoform pics come. There is a Stealth overlay system which displays the timer on the screen, so it is very simple to read/calculate.
When sectional timing comes, the current system would become redundant. The problem is that the sectional timing is madly expensive. But I am almost certain that I heard or read somewhere that GC are going this way and that they have found a less ridiculous quote for the installation. Lets hope so

Bloody hell, can they not just use the same timing chip that they use for the Argus ? Readers at every 400m's ? Chip goes in saddle cloth or jockeys helmet...weighs a princely 3 grams :S

I will set up Kenilworth for less than R100k .....chips get registered to each jockey ... and times collated by relating jockey to horse for the race ....

Interesting - was always wondering how these were calculated - being recorded manually, there are surely mistakes being made - better than nothing I suppose, but currently for me not a big factor when studying form :S

This system must be new ..................when Computadorm started the column ,no actual record was available!...............it was a formula based on overall race time with a lengths differential over last 400m?.
(Could never find anybody who could actually provide the formula)

Madji
the costs are in the region of R1,5M per course, if I heard correctly. If you have a proper workable solution at even double your estimate, I guarantee you the powers that be will jump at it. Please call me.
The sensors or transmittors would be stitched into the saddle cloths and the receivers on the inside rail. The problem comes when the powers that be insist on overlays on TT. To me, I do not care about live displays, rather about form and reviews. With live displays, all we get is a brownie point for the commentator referring to how fast or how slow the pace is or was. No refunds.....
To me, if our approach is one which is purely focussed on form info, then the costs are going to be a lot lower and punters, owners, trainers and jocks will be able to refer to the info, which is published after every race.
In essence, that's surely what we want ?
