Golf.
After a couple of seasons at the Serengeti Golf Club in Ekurhuleni, this event returns to Glendower GC for the first time since 1997 when Vijay Singh held off Zimbabwean Nick Price by a stroke with an 18-under total. Those 2 players along give us a strong clue that ball-striking is key at this classical course and the 2007 changes since that event - predominantly around the green complexes - won't change that requirement.
At 7,564 yards the track might look like a brute in terms of length, but it's worth considering that the altitude affects the flight of the ball by around 10% in this region so don't be blinkered into thinking this is purely a bomber's course. 2012 BMG Classic winner (Sunshine Tour, at Glendower GC) Teboho Sefatsa describes his home course as 'as one of the country's best courses' stating that 'The course does not favour the big-hitter or the deft short-game player. You need to bring an all-round game, and you need to play the course gracefully. Simply put, you need to hit straight and then follow up with quality shots'. The fairways are reportedly being narrowed for this week which will present a further challenge off the tee, the rough is set to be quite thick, plus trees and water await the more errant players - all of which will add to the test. That said, the greens are USGA standard bentgrass running to 12 on the stimp, plus a regular watering from the ever-present thunderstorms will ensure that putting surfaces are receptive to good shots and those who can keep out of trouble will be able to compile a decent enough score here..
I'm putting together a few bets and will post later..
Has anyone played on this course.
