Bloodstock South Africa Newsletter November 2013 Edition 6:
Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale :
The winner of the 2013 R3m Emperor’s Palace RTR Cup Winter Star was a mere R100 000 purchase and proved an excellent pick by the upcoming new trainer Johan Janse Van Vuuren for his new young Mauritian owner Vicky Veeramooto. Congratulations to Johan and Vicky as well as the wider team of Donavan and Monique Monsour. What a great team effort and as Hannibal says in the A Team – “love it when a plan comes together!”
This sale really is the sale of dreams and epitomises the spirit of this sale and what our business stands for – everyone has a chance of finding that champion no matter who you are, where you come from , and how much money you do or don’t have.
A big thank you to all our loyal vendors, buyers and underbidders who supported this year’s Emperors Palace Ready to Run Sale so well.
Adriaan Van Vuuren was once again the biggest buyer at the RTR sale and he was well supported by a large Eastern contingent of buyers who are new investors in South African bloodstock. We also had some new first time local buyers at the sale which is very exciting for our industry.
Whilst majority of the horses on sale were being sold for the first time, there is a growing pinhooking market which helps boost the economies of the industry.
Both the Summerhill and the Balmoral gallops were excellent showcases of the breeding industry and we must do more events like this to market our sport to new markets. Please make a note for your diaries for next year for these excellent days out.
It was a brilliant advert for South African breds with 3 of the top 4 past the post local horses in a field that was stronger than it has ever been before.
.
Stallion News:
It is exciting to see some new kids on the block in the winners enclosure with increasing frequency such as Ashawees, Kildonan, Royal Air Force, Argonaut, Sail from Seattle, Judpot,Jay Peg,AP Arrow and Admire Main.
Giants Causeway’s son Await the Dawn made a grand appearance at Summerhill this month and covered his first mares within an hour of arriving at the stud. A true professional who loves his job is always to be respected!
International Success for BSA grads:
Last season’s Champion South African sire Silvano had a smart winner in Singapore last Friday. His gelded son Takis won a class five handicap at Kranji to take his winning tally in the East to three.
Owned by Fred Crabbia, Takis was produced by the Shoe Danzig mare Odoratum. Bred by Cheveley Stud, Takis was a R350 000 buy at the 2009 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
The efforts to find a solution to our export woes are taking a step up in class and action and there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to find a way to get our horses out.
We need the support of all of you to help fund this by continuing to support our sales so we can invest all profits into this initiative. Breaking down our export barrier is the biggest growth opportunity this industry has ever seen or will ever see - and I hope that some of the surplus monies CTS will collect to fund their new race will be funnelled into helping us solve this puzzle. Our livelihoods depend on it.
Best wishes to all our breeders, clients, trainers and their BSA graduates racing in the Cape Summer Season in some mouth- watering clashes that are sure to produce some future hero’s for our history books.
Happy Racing.
Tom

Sad news that Summerhill lost Await The Dawn this morning
The below quote was part of a sportingpost article
Greig Muir, stallion master at Summerhill for the past 27 years, was distraught at the loss: “You spend your life looking for a horse like Await The Dawn, who pulverised top class opposition with uncommon ease. He was booked to capacity on the strength of both his own great appeal and a fantastic first crop of foals. He was as fertile a horse as I worked with, and I guess his unusually large heart was a contributing factor to a stellar career. There’s no replacing an Await The Dawn, but at least we’ll have some terrific foals to remember him by.”
