Some Muslims are in the midst of what is known as Muharram week. In Durban they going to bring out these floats (tazias), and the accompanying procession will re-enact the slaughter of the grandchildren of the prophet Mohammed by either slashing their bodies with knives/swords and / or banging their heads with their fists until the blood flows, symbolic of the martyrdom (pretty gory and not for the faint-hearted!).

Shias are staunch followers of this practice.
