When I was a teen we watched smut like many do but I would have been mad as hell if a teacher or any adult tried to get me to watch with them.( unless she was hot!)
It's out of line

Flash
the problem is neither the academy nor the pupils. The problem is IMVHO is the the following.
an academy that specialises in a career should have an intake protocol BUT that intake should be dwindled down considerably after a relatively short period of time, its not a Devine right to become a jockey or a footballer or a tennis player.
What i think happens at SA jockey academy is the pool of youngsters coming in is NOT what it used to be. BUT the desire to have a academy supersedes the desire to have the right candidates. We have too many mediocre jockeys already BUT the thought of having an academy with ONLY 1 qualifying jockey a year is scary so we take in plenty and qualify too many.
The same guy that is "put of control" at the academy will be struggling as a jockey. Its not about hitting or not hitting , its about identifying the next great jockey an the next very good jockey NOT the next 5 appies that are going to earn R10k a month riding scrubbers.
If the academy was self funded and run like a business things would be vary different. for now its academy preservation/job preservation and its showing in the calibre of jockey qualifying.
You can be firm with any pupil and fair, you dont need to hit, BUT you also have to have the skills and balls to say to that kid "you not gonna make it"
I rate SA jockeys as do most racing jurisdictions across the world but if it was a purely self funded business model it would be a far leaner and meaner business and for sure far less guys qualifying.

We in SA have always had of the best jocks in the world. Having said this the academy must have been doing something right. Why change ?

as far as i know its the ONLY country in the world with an academy for jockeys. Yes we have had and DO have some of the best jockeys in the world BUT we also have some of the worst.
My point is not about the world class riders, its about the pool they are getting plucked from. So my point is , Is the academy merely churning out numbers to keep going?
No one disputes the fouries and strydoms and muis roberts of the world BUT i can without even breaking sweat name 30 jockeys that have never been to an academy and are world class.
Its as if the need to get 5 or 6 people to qualify a year supersedes quality

Hibs
It has a riding school. Slightly different i think.
"Professional Jockeys
The first step on the professional ladder is to become an Apprentice or Conditional Jockey depending on weather the Jockey rides on the flat or over jumps. All Apprentices and Conditionals start off with a 7lb claim which is reduced down once they achieve a certain number of wins:
7lb Claimer
5lb Claimer
3lb Claimer
- until they have 20 wins (Apprentice)
- until they have 15 wins (Conditional)
- until they have 50 wins (Apprentice)
- until they have 40 wins (Conditional)
- until they have 95 wins (Apprentice)
- until they have 75 wins (Conditional)
The British Racing School run Licence, Continuation and Advanced Courses for both Apprentice and Conditional Jockeys. Please see the Jockey Courses section for more information
What skills do you need?
You will need to be committed, dedicated, highly motivated and a very good rider with good horsemanship skills. You will also need to be light. Flat Jockeys are usually around 8 stone with Jump Jockeys weighing slightly more at around 9st 7lbs. Jockeys are professional athletes and to be one you will need to be extremely fit and healthy.

Well those days are gone, rightly or wrongly.
Does anyone remember david carstens? Imagine klaping him it would kill him

I believe that a while ago a young appy commited suicide at the academy!! I think that they should come clean so all parents and potential jockeys should be aware of the pitfalls,It is of utmost importance to maintain the strict code of being a jockey as you have seen what has happened overseas with drugs, graft etc.We have an excellent name in the world regarding the jockeys we produce and we cannot afford to be classified as another African disaster.

I am a big believer in "spare the rod and spoil the child!" Too many kids need discipline these days and the cane and army are needed!
