What next - Vets...
11 years 8 months ago
I have received an account from a vet charging me R1350.50 plus vat, for changing the ownership name on their file. Wow! I am shuddering to think what other innovative ideas these people are going to come up with to make money out of me?
They have started off the wrong foot with me from the outset.
I have had my fair share of trouble with vets in the past. In one case I was charged for pregnancy medication for my gelding.
Another issue I have with the vets are them charging fuel for all the horses they see on one trip. They make one trip, see 20 horses, and charge all 20 owners for the trip. ( Trip of 8 km = R135,00; 135x20= R2700.00 for 8km, not bad)
Now this name charge. First time I hear of this.

I was amazed to see one pays for a pair of sterile gloves what I pay for a whole box (30 pairs) for my medical kits. This is just one small example of how we as owners are being worked over by VETS. Talking to a mate of mine the other day, he mentioned his horse had cost him on average R4000 a month for the past 5 months. Well known stable and a sound horse. He contacted the Vets and said that without his personal permission for the go-ahead for any treatment the bills would not be paid. Hallelujah !! The bills stopped. In my personal experience these bills depend almost 80% on your trainer, his training methods and how he "handles" his stable Vets. Most Vets do give discounts for early settlement, but like in most cases, if you dont ask you wont receive ! So ask, query and dont keep quiet. Vets are very good in what they do but will try and milk you for every cent.

I have had a dog that received chemo from a vet every week for a few months - If this was a Racing Vet I would have had to bond my home to make the payments - I just took my other dog to a vet for 4 days treatment for an infection(15 mins a time) that cost me R760 but I shudderto think what a racing vet would charge for that!!

Mr H, need your Vet. My girlfriends old dog got sick and took her to our vets here on a Sunday and they charged R500+ for the consultation and then had to put down another R1000 before any test would be done. Next day had to pay for another consultation and pay again. To cut a long story short on the Thursday morning early she was not well and Carey took her to the same Vets and asked them to give her some thing to help her feel better.as she was going for a biopsy later. They would not treat her without agreeing to pay another consultation fee! At that stage we had paid a total of R7000+ already to that practise.:X Carey took her to another Vet and the nurse treated her for pain straight away and half an hour later the Vet put her to sleep. I am not saying our horse Vets are angels but I can phone them at 2.00am with a sick horse and they get up and drive and treat him/her. No questions about money or anything. Many(not all) small animal Vets prey on your love of your pet.

the solution is for the nhra to appoint all vets and have standard charges like they do elsewhere. once these is done a strict no puncture rule with extremely harse penalties must be applied. we will see some serious form reversal if these is happen

There is no way a horse vet can ever compare with a general vet - My Vets are a practice called Boksburg Veterinary Hospital - They have about 6 vets in that practice. A consult is about R200 excluding meds. I paid R140 per chemo drip to be administered. I remember the lovely vet bills I received when I still had horses in training and they were extreme in comparison

Mr H, the day consults were about R380 before meds and sunday/night were around R500 and would not touch them without the payment and to make it worse we had dealt with them for 5years or so and had never owed them anything for more than 2 days! On the Sunday I had to give them R1500 deposit before they would even run a test! Where we need to start is get the Vet council to drop the tariffs that Vets can charge. Most charge less than they are allowed to charge.

I phoned the vet in milnerton next to the training center for a price to have my cat cut,I saved the cat ,from the gutters, any way the lady told me R1200, I took the cat to animal welfare, I paid R180, this is the biggest crook business a round.
