Stacked hind legs and Dom Zaki
11 years 8 months ago
Vaughan Marshall scratched three runners today giving "stacked hind legs" as the reason. Can anyone explain what it means?
Dom Zaki scratched all his runners on Saturday and today as a result of a virus.

Flash, I am on record as having warned them about this. EHV is left to run riot in SA and remains an uncontrolled disease. But, any excuse to do any "study" and waste funds is the norm. I took on two issues, the forst being the AHS innocs and the second being the EHV situation - the study has been done overseas, its the same disease, but no, we want our "own" study. Just imagine we all stop vaccinating our children against polio or smallpox, just because the study was done overseas......? Racing people are just plane dumb and so filled with egos, it is a miracle that it survives.
The Owners are severely out of pocket, paying for time at rest and exhorbitant vet bills. There are EHV vaccines available, but they must be given at about 5 months of age, when the foal has lost its mother's immunity, to every foal born and then regularly thereafter. Its far too late to start EHV innocs once the horse is in Training - this is the same as waiting for your child to get polio or smallpox and then trying to vaccinate.....
In my 13 years at Vaal, this is the first year that I have seen viral infections continue through Winter, our dormant period. The same appears the case at other Gauteng centres and, indeed, throughout the country. We are on the brink of an epidemic as Summer beckons and the Operators will see their bottom lines decimated. Only then will they wake up and act.......which they havent done yet, because the Owners have had to fit the bills and fields have been full due to full stables.
It remains amazing how long it takes to get anything done when it doesnt effect the bottom line. For instance, when the French bought our first 4 races and they had to be at 30 minute intervals, it took 24 hours to make new openings in the rails to get horses to start quicker. When we asked for two new openings through the same rails for Training purposes, we gave up after 3 years of begging.....

thank you louis for these information. i am tell plenty virus this year from what you say it is going to be big problem. for me i think the operator dont mind another epidemic because we all ways have brighton or musselborugh or sweden or australia or america. these is the biggest problem for me our local horse dont have the priority no more. owners will soon get sick of pay pay pay but i think no one but the trainer care

LG, was this because we had a ''mild winter'' or could it be a new strain of the virus??

Greg, the mild Winter has certainly played a role. But, EHV has many strains or derivitives and has been allowed to run riot, unchecked in our population.
Whilst EHV is not the only virus, it is the main one, which could be vaccinated against. Many horses will miss vital races this Summer.....
